About The Position

The Mechanic performs work of considerable difficulty in the repair and maintenance of agency vehicles and equipment in safe operation; performs related work as assigned.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • The ability to read and write in English, utilize basic math skills and basic computer word processing and the ability to comprehend written instructions and record information.
  • This employee will be required to successfully complete all required initial and update trainings on an on-going basis.
  • Ability to be certified within one year of employment with Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic certifications by the State of Michigan in gas and diesel engines, drive train, suspension, brakes and electrical systems.
  • This position requires driving; individuals must have a valid Michigan driver’s license with three (3) or more years of driving experience, less than six (6) points, and no exclusionary violations on driving record.
  • Two years previous experience as a heavy-duty diesel and gas truck mechanic.
  • Experience performing a wide variety of repair tasks, including diagnosing mechanical problems and proficiency in gas and arc welding.
  • The capacity to work in a team environment with intermittent supervision.
  • The ability to work respectfully and courteously with a wide variety of individuals, including the public, agency employees and passengers.
  • Must pass all required background checks, physicals and drug screens. If the background check reveals disqualifying information, employment shall be terminated unless the disqualifying information was successfully appealed as inaccurate, expunged or set aside.

Responsibilities

  • Be able to use and understand an array of tools and technical equipment.
  • Be able to use complex electronic diagnostic equipment to analyze on-board computers and other systems and trouble shoot repairs.
  • Be able to look at mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems, identify problems and think about possible solutions.
  • Maintain an efficient and effective system of routine maintenance and preventative care of vehicles in the fleet.
  • Diagnose, assign and repair agency owned vehicles and other vehicles that are assigned to our fleet.
  • Correctly and efficiently install parts.
  • Perform gas and arc welding.
  • Conduct test drives after repairs to ensure the vehicle is running properly.
  • Keep accurate records of all repairs, including supplies, parts, and labor, utilizing data bases as appropriate.
  • Maintain a current inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Perform bus safety inspections; assist State Police during mandatory annual bus safety inspections.
  • Promote a high standard of safety and good housekeeping methods in all work areas.
  • Report any and all unsafe and hazardous conditions to the Transportation Fleet Manager.
