About The Position

The Fleet Mechanic II is a senior-level role responsible for leading advanced diagnostics, complex repairs, and major overhauls on vehicles and equipment used in solid waste operations. This position involves mentoring junior mechanics, overseeing repair projects, and ensuring the fleet operates efficiently, safely, and in compliance with all regulations. The Mechanic II serves as a technical expert and a key contributor to fleet reliability and performance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; advanced technical training or vocational certifications preferred.
  • Minimum of 5–7 years of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair, including diesel engines, heavy equipment, and hydraulic systems.
  • Proven expertise in advanced diagnostics and major repair projects.
  • Valid driver’s license required; CDL strongly preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of diesel engines, transmissions, electrical systems, and hydraulics.
  • Proficiency in using advanced diagnostic tools, schematics, and repair manuals.
  • Strong leadership and team collaboration skills.
  • Exceptional problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

Nice To Haves

  • ASE Master Technician Certification or equivalent preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex diagnostics and repairs on engines, transmissions, hydraulics, suspension systems, electrical systems, and electronic control modules (ECMs).
  • Lead major overhauls and rebuilds of diesel engines, heavy equipment, and specialized vehicles.
  • Troubleshoot advanced mechanical and electronic issues using state-of-the-art diagnostic tools.
  • Serve as a technical expert, providing guidance and support to PM Technicians, Technician I’s.
  • Lead repair teams on large-scale or time-sensitive projects.
  • Ensure work is completed efficiently and to high-quality standards.
  • Assist in developing and improving preventative maintenance schedules and procedures.
  • Ensure fleet equipment remains in optimal working condition and minimizes downtime.
  • Conduct detailed inspections to identify potential issues before they escalate.
  • Monitor and enforce compliance with company safety protocols, OSHA standards, and DOT regulations.
  • Conduct safety inspections and maintain detailed documentation of fleet compliance.
  • Proactively identify and resolve potential safety hazards.
  • Mentor junior mechanics by providing hands-on training and technical instruction.
  • Assist in the onboarding and skills development of new team members.
  • Recommend training programs and certifications for team improvement.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance, and parts usage in fleet management software.
  • Provide detailed reports on equipment performance and recommend upgrades or replacements.
  • Collaborate with management to plan and prioritize repair schedules.
