About The Position

Under general supervision, this position performs various types of maintenance and repair of fleet maintenance vehicles, in accordance with applicable specifications, schedules and standards. This position determines needed repairs and/or replacements for the City of Amarillo’s vehicles; ensures the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition; and provides written documentation of repairs to meet district, state and federal requirements. This position will be required to work shifts including evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime as necessary by the department and during inclement weather. This position is considered weather essential personnel.

Requirements

  • Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent and a minimum of two years of automotive repair experience.
  • EPA 609 Technician Certification, required.
  • State Inspector License, required.
  • Valid Texas Class A CDL Driver’s License Required.
  • Or ability to obtain certifications and licensing in first Six (6) months of employment.
  • Applicant required to provide personal hand tools.
  • Ability to operate and repair small/light equipment, such as power tools.
  • Ability to operate and repair medium equipment and machinery, such as vehicles or commercial mowers.
  • Ability to operate and repair heavy or complex machinery, such as HVAC systems, construction equipment, or water plants.
  • Ability to operate computers for data entry and word processing.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skill.
  • Ability to operate computers and other basic office equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs maintenance and services on side loaders, dump trucks, rear loaders, transfer trucks and trailers, chipper trucks, VAC trucks and other various types of equipment.
  • Maintains records of all services and repairs.
  • Practices safety, good housekeeping and preventive maintenance in all work.
  • Diagnoses potential vehicle malfunctions (e.g. using computer diagnostic equipment, etc.) to determine needed vehicle repairs and/or replacements.
  • Performs state inspections of transportation equipment, to ensure its safe operating condition.
  • Maintains and repairs heavy equipment (e.g. forklifts, trucks, vans, etc.) to insure its safe operating condition, repairs include, but are not limited to steering, brakes and systems repair, cooling and HVAC repairs, starting, charging, lighting and other electrical repairs, diesel engine repair and diagnosis, transmission and hydraulics repair .
  • Maintains tools and/or equipment to ensure the availability of equipment in a safe operating condition.
  • Operates tow truck to transport broken down or snow bound vehicles.
  • Responds to emergency situations (e.g. drives wrecker to tow in disabled vehicles/equipment, etc.) to resolve immediate safety concerns.
  • Trains other employees as necessary.
  • Transports various items (e.g. tools, equipment, supplies, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site.
  • Performs general housekeeping of the shop area on a daily basis.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
