About The Position

This is a hybrid role splitting time between Training and Driving. The Driver Trainer position is responsible for the coordination of the driver training program in an area, maintaining regulatory compliance documentation, and helping promote an overall strong safety and compliance culture. As the 'Airgas' Delivery Driver, the individual is responsible for safely and efficiently delivering compressed gas cylinders to local and regional business customers from an Airgas branch or plant location using a company provided straight or box truck. The Driver loads, unloads, delivers, and returns compressed gas cylinders while frequently interacting with Airgas customers. Airgas operates a modern and efficient fleet. Most vehicles are under 6 years old and equipped with driver-friendly technology, such as On Board Computers, collision avoidance technology, latest camera technology and GPS navigation.

Requirements

  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License required.
  • HS Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Valid USDOT Medical Examiner's Certificate (card).
  • Hazmat Endorsement (H or X Endorsement) preferred.
  • No Air Brake restrictions on CDL.
  • Minimum of 5 years of CDL driving experience.
  • Must have a clean driving record.
  • Must have excellent organizational, written and oral communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to use computers; prefer experience with MS Office or Google Suite applications.
  • Prior knowledge of safety related and OSHA regulations preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and under some pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to read and comprehend material data sheets.
  • Must have a high attention to detail.
  • Ability to safely operate a forklift and other material handling equipment.
  • Prior experience in the gas, welding and safety supply industries preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist/Train new and existing associates in driver training/defensive driving techniques including the Smith Driver System, loading and unloading procedures, completion of required paperwork, fuel efficient driving and other techniques, company policies, and regulations; must be available for early start times.
  • Assist/train new and existing associates in the safe use of forklift.
  • Conduct forklift refresher training.
  • Administer road tests as part of the new driver selection process.
  • Conduct annual driver road tests for all drivers.
  • Assist location managers in completing annual driver demonstrations.
  • Complete follow up training that is identified through observation rides or accident investigations.
  • Investigate unsafe delivery sites, as required.
  • Help with or provide training required by government legislation including drug and alcohol training.
  • Work safely and meet the requirements of all safety procedures and rules as prescribed by State laws, Federal law, and Airgas policies.
  • Safely loads, delivers and unloads cylinders containing compressed gases to customer locations.
  • Records deliveries and pick-ups on a load manifest and obtains signatures from customers for receipt purposes.
  • Collects empty cylinders or rejected or unsold merchandise.
  • Returns empty cylinders to either a plant or branch location for refilling.
  • Establishes and maintains good customer relations.
  • Listens to and helps resolve service inquiries and complaints.
  • Performs cylinder inspections per operating procedures.
  • Maintains load manifests and all required vehicle documents by ensuring they are properly completed and reconciled with truck counts and shipping documents before and after deliveries.
  • Ensures that vehicle manifests, vehicle placards, cylinder labeling and load nesting and strapping at all times comply with Airgas safety standards (SAFECOR) and all government regulations including, but not limited to, those issued by the Department of Transportation (DOT), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Food & Drug Administration (FDA), and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
  • Performs pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections documenting deficiencies; ensures all safety items are in good working order.
  • Strictly observes all safety rules and promptly reports any accidents or injuries to management.
  • Operates a pallet jack, forklift and other warehouse equipment; works in warehouse or on dock as needed.
