About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Fleet Manager, the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor plans, coordinates, and supervises daily operations of the City’s fleet maintenance and upfitting shop. This position ensures safe, efficient and cost-effective repair and maintenance of light duty vehicles, heavy equipment, emergency apparatus and specialty equipment to maximize fleet availability and service reliability. This role serves as a working supervisor, providing technical leadership, staff supervision, and operational oversight to maintain high service standards for all City departments.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required, associate’s degree in Diesel Technology, Automotive Technology, or related field preferred.
  • Ten (10) years of progressively responsible fleet maintenance experience.
  • Valid driver’s license; CDL preferred or ability to obtain within specified timeframe.

  • One (1) year of lead or supervisory experience is preferred.

  • APWA Certified Public Fleet Professional (CPFP)

Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily shop operations, including work assignments, scheduling, and workflow prioritization.
  • Establish and monitor shop performance standards to ensure timely turnaround and high equipment availability.
  • Ensure preventive maintenance (PM) compliance and timely completion of repairs.
  • Coordinate outsourced repairs and vendor services as needed.
  • Ensure work orders are accurately documented in the fleet management system.
  • Balance workload and staffing between vehicle maintenance and upfitting operations to meet departmental priorities.
  • Supervise and train assigned maintenance staff.
  • Provide feedback, coaching and corrective action when necessary to employees under supervision.
  • Promote a strong safety culture and enforce shop safety policies.
  • Coordinate technical training, certification development and work with the Fleet Manager to help technicians to qualify for promotions
  • Provide advanced diagnostics and troubleshooting support.
  • Ensure adherence to manufacturer standards and industry best practices.
  • Assist in evaluating new equipment specifications and upfitting standards.
  • Stay up to date with the latest automotive technologies and repair techniques.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of training programs, adjusting as necessary.
  • Assist Fleet Manager with budget preparation and monitoring.
  • Oversee parts inventory control and purchasing practices.
  • Review invoices, vendor contracts, and service agreements.
  • Track key performance indicators (KPIs) and PM compliance.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations related to fleet maintenance operations, including but not limited to; DOT, OSHA, EPA, and state regulatory requirements, including compliance with the City’s Storm Water Management Plan.
  • Maintain required records for inspections and regulatory audits.
  • Lead safety meetings and implement corrective actions when needed.
  • The primary function of this role is not primarily to work as a mechanic, but this employee remains a part of the fleet maintenance staff and performs maintenance work as needed especially when higher priority jobs need to be completed.
