Under general direction of Fleet Maintenance Manager, assists in establishing uniform practices relating to repair and maintenance of automotive vehicles and determining the serviceability and adequacy of equipment; plans, schedules, assigns, supervises and may participate in the servicing, preventive maintenance and repair of a wide variety of automotive equipment. Requirements

  • Completion of high school curriculum or equivalent.
  • Five (5) years experience in automotive mechanics.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • Formal training in automotive mechanics.
  • Possession of a valid Class B Commercial driver's license. If assigned to Bus Maintenance a Passenger Transport (P) endorsement is required.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in the repair of light and heavy-duty automotive and related equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operating characteristics of gasoline, diesel and alternative fuel engines and of heavy-duty public service maintenance and construction equipment.
  • Knowledge of the fueling, lubrication and routine service requirements of automobiles, trucks and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Skill in use and care of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work.
  • Ability to operate equipment that requires a high degree of manipulative skill.
  • Ability to maintain equipment-servicing schedules, records and reports.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair or adjust defects in a wide variety of automotive equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to supervise and train subordinates in performing maintenance and repairs and to evaluate their performance.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, departments and the public.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in inclement weather.
  • Ability to pass a medical physical examination.
  • Ability to work shifts, including nights and weekends.
  • Incumbent must possess a set of mechanic's tools to perform skilled work.
  • Must have a good private driving record: (a) no more than two (2) convictions of moving violations in the last 36 months and (b) no DWI convictions in the last 60 months.
  • This is a DOT-designated and Airport-designated safety sensitive position as defined in DFW Airport’s Drug and Alcohol Administrative Policy and Procedure. Applicants selected for this position will be required to pass drug and alcohol tests prior to employment and to submit to drug and alcohol screening on a random basis during the length of their employment in the safety sensitive position.
  • Must obtain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) Airport Identification/Access Badge (badge) in accordance with Department of Homeland Security Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirements in Chapter 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 1500 et al., and DFW Airport’s Airport Security Program within thirty (30) days from date of employment and maintain qualification for a SIDA badge upon each badge renewal.
  • This is a designated Essential Employee position as defined in DFW Airport’s Categories and Classifications Administrative Policy and Procedure. An essential employee is one whose attendance is required to maintain airport operations during an emergency or inclement weather situation.

  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification.
  • Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification.
  • EPA Section 608 Refrigerant Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, schedules, assigns, inspects and participates in the work of Technicians and Helpers; checks work in progress and upon completion; evaluates performance of subordinates.
  • Performs and trains subordinates to perform a full range of repairs, including diagnosing and testing malfunctions and defects in equipment systems.
  • Establishes or provides input into preventive maintenance standards and goals and monitors records for attainment of goals.
  • Makes recommendations on the repair/replacement of major components or equipment, including cost justification.
  • Checks all new vehicles and equipment upon delivery for compliance with specifications; monitors warranty work on new vehicles; may develop specifications for equipment.
  • Troubleshoots unusual or difficult problems; may perform minor and major repair work; handles problems with user departments; road tests repaired equipment.
  • Prepares annual budget request and monitors shop expenditures.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports.
  • Orders parts, tools, equipment and supplies.
