About The Position

The Fleet Maintenance Supervisor independently supervises Mechanical Diesel Technicians, engaged in the maintenance, repair, and servicing of mass transit vehicles on an assigned shift. The Fleet Maintenance Supervisor assures us that the maintenance activities are carried out safely, effectively and efficiently to consistently provide timely, safe, and cost-effective transportation to the public. This position performs related work as required. The Fleet Maintenance Supervisor reports directly to the Superintendent of Maintenance.

Requirements

  • Extensive knowledge of the repair, overhaul and servicing principles and procedures of heavy-duty transit vehicles
  • Extensive knowledge in electronic engine/transmission diagnosis and repairs
  • Extensive knowledge of supervisory methods and procedures
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade
  • Proficient in planning, assigning and supervising the work of skilled Technicians conducive to safe and productive performances
  • Must be thoroughly knowledgeable on the “Maintenance Rule Book” and labor agreement
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral, excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback on Technicians’ performance and skills
  • Ability to execute preventive maintenance plans for mobile/non-mobile equipment
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise oral and written reports
  • Must be flexible and willing to be trained/retrained on new systems and system updates
  • Must be able to walk, use hands, reach, stoop, kneel, bend, push, talk, hear, and lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work as part of a team and perform quality leadership duties
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision and make sound decisions
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills required
  • Computer literate, with basic knowledge of Windows, word processing and spreadsheet software
  • Must be able to pass a DOT physical examination and drug screen
  • Must maintain a current North Carolina CDL, Class B with a “Passenger” and “Air Brake” endorsement
  • Must be willing to workdays, nights, weekends, holidays- shift may vary to meet demands and hours of the operation of bus service
  • Must be able to work in various weather conditions, temperatures, and loud noises, moving parts, fumes, and chemicals
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) of technical school / Associate degree with course work in transportation related field; or any equivalent combination of training, education and experience
  • Six (6) years experience in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of heavy-duty diesel vehicles, preferably in a mass transit or vehicle transportation operation
  • Certification of Completion from an approved technical program in Automotive/Diesel Technology and a minimum of five years automotive/diesel maintenance repair experience will be considered as viable candidates
  • Must possess a current North Carolina CDL license or permit, Class B with a “Passenger” and “Air Brake” endorsement

Nice To Haves

  • Evidence of supervisory experience in fleet maintenance of transit or transportation industry and supervising mechanics and other maintenance personnel, although not required, is a plus
  • Some computer experience; Windows, MS Word, Excel, and other maintenance customized transit programs

Responsibilities

  • Schedules and assigns work to Technicians.
  • Inspects/Supervises work in progress, ensuring all jobs are executed according to Agency repair standards and that all units released to the Transportation Department are clean and safe for service.
  • Independently forms opinions and makes decisions on vehicle safety, consulting the Superintendent of Maintenance and/or Maintenance Quality Control Officer for guidance as required
  • Provides detailed technical assistance and/or instruction as necessary
  • Instructs/Demonstrates the proper and safe use of tools and diagnostic equipment
  • Ensures that all policies, procedures and work rules are followed
  • Provides leadership, enthusiasm and a “can-do” attitude to ensure the success of the Maintenance Department
  • Communicates with the Transportation Department and Dispatch on the availability/non-availability of vehicles to ensure that the Transportation Department has units available to achieve pullout
  • Ensures that all shift assignments are executed/completed on schedule
  • Provides constructive counseling, feedback, and commendations to Maintenance staff, and when necessary, issues violations in compliance with Agency policies
  • Research and prepares vehicle performance reports and identifies breakdown trends and fleet defects
  • Monitors personnel work performance and attendance, maintain related records, and administers disciplinary action as required by Agency policies
  • Keeps abreast of new techniques and developments pertinent in the maintenance field
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
