About The Position

The Fleet Maintenance Manager provides strategic and operational leadership over citywide fleet and equipment maintenance programs, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, optimizing asset utilization, and overseeing lifecycle cost management. This role directs supervisory and technical personnel in executing diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and repair protocols across a multi-class fleet, while leveraging data analytics and vendor partnerships to enhance reliability, reduce downtime, and improve service delivery.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 5 years of progressive fleet maintenance management experience required, including oversight of automotive and diesel vehicle operations.
  • Must possess a valid South Dakota driver's license or ability to obtain within 30 days from date of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Automotive Technology, Diesel Technology, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides strategic leadership in the planning and execution of citywide fleet maintenance operations, ensuring alignment with departmental objectives, regulatory mandates, and asset lifecycle optimization.
  • Participates in the development, administration, and monitoring of the fleet maintenance budget, identifying cost-reduction opportunities through data-driven process improvements and resource allocation strategies.
  • Prepares and delivers executive-level reports and recommendations on fleet condition, capital planning, operational performance, and long-term fleet maintenance infrastructure needs.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations-including DOT, EPA, and industry standards-by managing audit-ready documentation and implementing robust compliance protocols.
  • Contributes to the formulation of long-range fleet modernization plans, integrating operational analytics, emerging technologies, and projected service demands to guide capital investment decisions.
  • Manages technician scheduling, shift coverage, and workload distribution to meet dynamic service requirements while maintaining operational continuity and labor efficiency.
  • Directs the deployment and optimization of fleet management systems, telematics platforms, and analytics tools to enable predictive maintenance, real-time diagnostics, and performance tracking.
  • Advises senior leadership on fleet-related policy development, regulatory updates, and strategic investment opportunities to enhance operational resilience and sustainability.
  • Maintains centralized, auditable records of maintenance activities, inspections, and compliance documentation using computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and enterprise asset management (EAM) platforms.
  • Conducts comprehensive operational assessments and performance audits to identify inefficiencies, implement corrective actions, and drive continuous improvement across fleet services.
  • Develops and implements fleet-wide performance metrics, KPIs, and benchmarking standards to evaluate maintenance effectiveness and operational efficiency.
  • Designs and facilitates technical training and workforce development programs for fleet supervisory and maintenance personnel, emphasizing regulatory compliance, emerging technologies, and advanced diagnostic practices.
