About The Position

Perform preventative maintenance, repairs and diagnostics of electronic components, power train management controls, climate controls and other on-board controls on Mesa County’s fleet of vehicles, heavy equipment and specialized machinery. Job requirements will include installation of specialized accessory equipment, such as two-way radios, cell phones, lap tops and modems and miscellaneous law enforcement equipment. Required skills will also include some welding and fabricating and other general duties as assigned. This position may require that the employee work alone, unsupervised on field repair assignments at times. Perform all levels of preventative maintenance on Mesa County’s fleet of heavy equipment, light automotive vehicles, light and medium duty trucks, transit buses, specialized seasonal equipment and machinery including some landfill equipment. Job functions will also include, but not be limited to, diagnostics and repairs of gasoline and diesel engines, power train components, hydraulic systems, A/C systems, hydraulic and air brake systems, complex electrical and electronic systems and other components which may not be listed. Job functions will also include welding and fabricating skills and experience. Job functions will include the knowledge, experience and skills to be able to read and follow technical instructions and diagnostic flow charts and to skillfully use diagnostic scan tools, analyzers, digital volt/ohm meters, A/C recovery and charge stations, and other fluid recycler/recovery machines. Job functions will also include the use of vehicle and equipment high lifts and other specialty shop tools specific to maintenance and repair activities such as tire changing machines and welding and metal cutting tools and equipment. Job functions will include repair and maintenance of shop equipment, and cleaning and detailing of vehicles and equipment, as assigned. Must be able to use a desktop, laptop or tablet based terminal to log labor time and repair notes and data to electronic work orders. Performs federal DOT-mandated safety inspections and certifies vehicle safety. Job functions may at times also include field work where some repair and maintenance activities will be performed in the field (away from shop facility) with a field equipped service truck and without direct supervision. Experienced employees may assume lead worker responsibilities, especially in the absence of direct supervision. Oral and written communications must be clear and effective. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school education or GED with one (1) year vocational/technical school training specific to heavy equipment and automotive repair and maintenance and three (3) years of progressively responsible related work experience.
  • Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job.
  • Class “A” or “B” Colorado Commercial Driver's License - Tanker Endorsement
  • Department of Transportation Safety Inspector Certification (or regulatory experience requirements)
