About The Position

Performs work as a long-haul truck operator loading, unloading, and transporting throughout the state of Texas vehicles and heavy equipment such as: a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, profiling/milling machine, and dump truck. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Requirements

  • No education required
  • 3 years of experience in transporting and/or operating maintenance and/or construction equipment . (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
  • Considerable knowledge of: Equipment operation used in transportation construction and roadway maintenance work and proper loading and unloading methods
  • Commercial vehicle traffic rules and regulations
  • Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Methods and procedures involving storage & transport of hazardous materials
  • Proficient skill in: Operating light duty and complex heavy construction/maintenance equipment
  • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
  • Prioritizing and organizing work
  • Preparing and maintaining confidential and sensitive records, files, and reports
  • Training in a classroom, office, or field environment
  • Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
  • Ability to: Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Follow verbal and written instructions
  • Drive and ride in a vehicle for extended periods
  • Ability to plan and organize delivery routes and manage operational logistics
  • Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
  • Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
  • Subject to noise
  • Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)

  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
  • Will be required to work alternate schedules during an emergency response situation such as adverse weather events.
  • Will be required to travel to other district/division shops within the state as needed.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
  • Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.

Responsibilities

  • Operates tractor-trailer haul trucks to relocate heavy and light equipment including loading, securing, and unloading equipment on haul trailers in compliance with federal, state, and Department motor vehicle laws, regulations, and standards.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities to include tires and equipment attachments
  • Monitors and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, Preventative Maintenance Inspection (PMI) checklist, and records work in progress.
  • Trains other employees on equipment operation and safety procedures.
  • Supports emergency Continuity of Operations efforts, including disaster response, evacuations, emergency supply transport, and operating light and complex heavy equipment during emergency operations.
  • Contributes to budgeting and cost-efficiency efforts for fuel usage, vehicle maintenance, and operational logistics.
  • Plans and coordinates deliveries and routes to maximize operational efficiency and meet deadlines.
  • Coordinates with divisions, districts, and vendors to deliver and pick up heavy and light equipment.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
