About The Position

The Fleet Deckhand position at Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) in Mt. Vernon, IN, is a full-time, non-exempt role that involves working under the direction of a Captain on a tugboat at the American River Transportation Company (ARTCo) fleeting location. The primary responsibilities include general housekeeping and upkeep of the vessel, which encompasses tasks such as washing, chipping, painting, and cleaning. The deckhand will also engage in tow work, which involves building rigging and preparing tow for lineboats, as well as fleet work that includes preparing barges for delivery to local customers. Additionally, the role may require assisting barge cleaners, mechanics, and welders as needed. The deckhand will assist the captain with required vessel reports to ensure compliance with environmental, safety, and USCG regulations, and will be responsible for reporting any problems or damage encountered during operations. It is crucial for the deckhand to report all injuries, illnesses, and near misses in a timely manner. The position may also involve additional duties and responsibilities as required or requested by the captain or other supervisory personnel. Candidates for this position should possess the ability to follow directions and execute tasks under supervision, with a preference for those who have inland waterway decking experience, although it is not mandatory. Strong reading and writing skills are necessary to comprehend and complete various documents. The role requires flexibility in scheduling, as assignments and priorities may change based on the vessel's needs. The deckhand must be able to work independently and as part of a team, and should be comfortable working in various climates and conditions. The position requires the ability to work extended hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, and candidates must possess a current Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card or be willing to apply for one within five days of hire.
