About The Position

SAN’s fleet plays a critical role in keeping operations running safely, efficiently, and reliably every day. The Facilities Management team is seeking a skilled and motivated professional who takes pride in managing complex operations, solving problems, and ensuring that vehicles and equipment are ready to support the people and services that depend on them. This role has direct impact on operational continuity by overseeing the lifecycle of fleet assets, coordinating services and resources, and ensuring compliance, safety, and performance across the fleet program. The ideal candidate brings a strong mix of operational expertise, organization, and leadership. Success in this role requires someone who is proactive, detail-oriented, and comfortable balancing strategic oversight with hands-on coordination. This role offers an opportunity to continue making a meaningful contribution while helping drive efficient and effective fleet operations.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or GED
  • Three years of fleet maintenance operations or program coordination experience of which two years include contract administrative management
  • Or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the Authority’s vehicle insurance policy.
  • Successful completion of a fingerprint-based background investigation, training, and testing required for employment and operation of Authority and San Diego County physical security, surveillance, radio and telecommunications equipment.

  • Certified Automotive Fleet Manager (CAFM), Certified Automotive Fleet Specialist (CAFS), Certified Transportation Professional (CTP), Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP), or Certified Professional in Asset Management (CPAM), Fleet Management APWA, Fleet Management NAFA.

Responsibilities

  • Fleet Operations & Lifecycle Management: Oversees the full lifecycle management of fleet vehicles and equipment, ensuring efficient vehicle acquisition, inventory control, utilization, and performance tracking. Coordinates vehicle procurement activities including warranties, incentives, and specifications, while managing vehicle assignments, preventive maintenance cycles, emissions compliance, and fuel usage. Monitors and resolves lifecycle issues related to accidents, damages, repairs, turn-ins, surplus, and disposal to ensure the fleet remains safe, reliable, and operationally effective.
  • Contracted Services & Compliance Coordination: Organizes and verifies contracted fleet services and participates in bid and quotation processes to support procurement and vendor selection. Ensures contracted work and invoices align with service requirements and contractual terms. Maintains compliance by verifying and updating vehicle registrations, permits, insurance, and related documentation. Supports the development and tracking of work schedules, operational budgets, expenses, work standards, processes, procedures, and performance metrics.
  • Team Leadership & Safety Oversight: Supervises assigned staff by establishing performance expectations, monitoring progress, and providing coaching and development feedback. Promotes and implements safety initiatives, ensuring work activities adhere to organizational policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements. Provides training, technical guidance, and operational support to staff and stakeholders. Coordinates work activities with internal teams and external partners while responding to operational issues, emergencies, inquiries, and service concerns.
  • Operations Support & Reporting: Participates in operational and planning meetings while maintaining accurate records and documentation related to fleet activities. Develops and tracks budgets, cost reports, metrics, timecards, worksheets, and work requests to support operational transparency and decision-making. Conducts worksite visits and operates vehicles as needed to support inspections, coordination, and operational oversight. Performs related duties as assigned in support of fleet operations and organizational objectives. This position may require occasional evening, weekend, and holiday coverage based on operational needs.- Work-Related Driving: Operate and drive Authority vehicles for pick up, drop-off, and services.
