About The Position

The Fixed-Wing Line Pilot, Aircraft Pilot 2 (Airplane) position at the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) involves flying the DNR's multi-mission fixed-wing aircraft, specifically the Kodiak 100, to support wildfire suppression operations. This part-time, permanent role requires the pilot to perform aerial firefighting, coordinate airspace restrictions, and provide reconnaissance and administrative flight support. The pilot will also be responsible for maintaining the aircraft in a rapid response status and participating in training and evaluations to ensure proficiency in flight operations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • 1,200 Flight Hours Pilot-in-Command - Airplane.
  • 200 Flight Hours - Airplane Pilot-in-Command in category and class to be flown.
  • 100 Flight Hours - Airplane Pilot-in-Command within the preceding 12 months.
  • 500 Flight Hours - Airplane Pilot-in-Command Cross Country.
  • 200 Flight Hours - Airplane Pilot-in-Command in a Mountainous area.
  • 100 Flight Hours - Airplane Pilot-in-Command Night flight.
  • 50 Flight Hours - Airplane Pilot-in-Command Instrument - in flight.
  • 75 Flight Hours - Airplane Pilot-in-Command Instrument - actual/simulated.
  • 25 Flight Hours - Airplane Pilot-in-Command Make and Model (Daher, Kodiak 100) or ability to receive 50 hours within the first 3 months of hire.
  • Possess a valid and current FAA Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) or Commercial Pilot license - Airplane with Instrument Rating.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate professionally.

  • FAA Certified Flight Instructor or US Military Instructor Pilot qualification.

Responsibilities

  • Function as Pilot-in-Command of a DNR assigned Kodiak 100 for wildfire suppression operations.
  • Coordinate airborne firefighting activities with multiple agency aircraft.
  • Provide reconnaissance and administrative flight support as assigned.
  • Plan and execute flights both VFR and IFR within Washington State and bordering states.
  • Transport personnel, parts, and equipment to/from various airports.
  • Maintain the assigned airplane in a rapid response status, including daily inspections and oversight of fuel levels.
  • Prepare reports of fire activities and other work performed as required.
  • Assist with training observers and support crew members in safe aircraft operations and maintenance.
