Position Summary: As the Senior Living Fitness & Wellness Specialist, you will be responsible for supporting and implementing, and managing fitness programs that cater to the specific needs and abilities of senior residents within our community. Your focus will encompass various aspects of fitness, including land-based exercises, aquatic activities, strength training, and personal training with the primary goal of promoting overall health and wellness among our senior residents. Additionally, given the community focus on whole person, holistic, multi-dimensional wellness this position serves as an integral part of the interdisciplinary team and will work closely with team members across all departments on various initiatives, projects, events, and activities.

  • Ability to adapt exercise programs to accommodate varying fitness levels and physical limitations.
  • High School Diploma
  • Minimum Fitness certification/s. or the ability to attain after employment begins (required within first 6 months). Accepted certifications include: ACSM, ACE, NASM, and NSCA.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification. (if not currently certified, must obtain within first 90 days of employment)
  • Certification as a Fitness Specialist, Personal Trainer, or Group Exercise Instructor.

Nice To Haves

  • One to Three years’ experience working with seniors or in a senior living community
  • Professional Membership, Licensures, Certifications
  • Certification from one of the following: ACSM, ACE, NASM, and NSCA.

Responsibilities

  • Fitness Assessments: Conduct initial fitness assessments for residents and staff to understand their fitness levels, medical history, and any limitations. Use this information to create personalized exercise plans.
  • Land-Based Exercises: Organize and lead group fitness classes, supervise “open” fitness center programming, and lead individual personal training sessions focusing on cardiovascular health, strength, flexibility, balance, and mobility enhancement.
  • Pre-Post Therapy programming: Work closely with the Therapy team to provide the highest quality continuum of care as residents are discharged from therapy to fitness and recommending/suggesting therapy services to residents who may benefit. This is important to ensure a seamless quality and continuum of care between residents, fitness, and therapy.
  • Aquatics Activities: Manage and supervise aquatic fitness programs, including water aerobics, swimming exercises, and other water-based activities to improve joint mobility and reduce impact on joints.
  • Strength Training: Develop and oversee strength training programs to improve muscle tone, bone density, and overall functional strength in a safe and controlled environment.
  • Health and Safety: Ensure all fitness activities are conducted with the highest regard for the safety and well-being of senior participants. Provide modifications and assistance as needed during exercise sessions.
  • Group Engagement: Create a supportive and motivating atmosphere during fitness classes to encourage resident participation and social interaction among seniors.
  • Equipment Management: Maintain and manage fitness equipment, ensuring it is clean, functional, and safe to use. Coordinate with appropriate departments for equipment maintenance and replacements.
  • Communication: Regularly communicate with residents and their families to update them on fitness programs and the progress of individual participants.
  • Record Keeping: Keep accurate records of resident participation, progress, and any health-related concerns, adhering to privacy and confidentiality guidelines.
  • Stay Informed: Stay up to date with the latest trends, research, and best practices in senior fitness, health, and wellness to continuously improve the quality and effectiveness of fitness programs.
  • Other Duties as assigned.
