About The Position

Under general supervision, this positionleads patrons in group fitness classes, events and activities and/or private/semi-private fitness training to help clients and class participants achieve their wellness goals. Classes/programs may include aerobics, Zumba, cycling, yoga, Pilates, strength/conditioning, weight loss, injury prevention, etc. either in a group or private setting. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Requirements

  • Requires a National Accredited Certification in either personal training or group fitness.
  • For two (2) or more certifications to be considered, they must be directly relevant to the type of coaching or class instruction the applicant will be providing on a regular basis. In example, Zumba certification would not count for an applicant primarily working as a Personal Trainer.
  • Knowledge of relevant town, state, and federal laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Knowledge of municipal recreation principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of fitness concepts, training approaches and training formats for more in-depth, specific coaching opportunities.
  • Knowledge of current fitness trends and research.
  • Knowledge of recreation center or fitness center equipment and facilities.
  • Skill in the training and supervision of patrons in a private coaching or group class setting.
  • Skill in verbal and written communication.
  • Skill in the use of computers and various software programs.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public in answering questions and handling difficult situations.
  • Ability to handle incidents and confrontations in a recreation facility.
  • Ability to provide a positive customer service attitude towards all patrons.
  • Ability to operate and repair small/light equipment, such as studio microphones or fitness studio equipment
  • Ability to teach, on average, three (3) classes or ten (10) hours each week.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology or a related field preferred.
  • Accredited Title such as CSCS, CPSS, Certified Exercise Physiologist, etc. preferred.
  • Two (2) years of experience training or instructing classes preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides, prepares for, and updates class routines and training curriculum to meet relevant fitness trends; develops new routines, introduces new exercises. Ensures classes and trainings maintain safe and proper exercise techniques.
  • Schedules client training sessions, including communicating with clients if a session must be canceled or rescheduled.
  • Oversees and manages a safe environment for group fitness/private coaching participants. Executes the proper techniques of various fitness skills. Provides a fun and enjoyable atmosphere.
  • Educates and informs participants of current trends and information on an ongoing basis throughout the duration of the class or session.
  • Attends all training workshops/seminars and meetings established by the Fitness and Wellness Coordinator.
  • Answers questions and makes referrals to class participants in the areas of personal training, specialty classes, injuries or additional education.
  • Assists with special events and participates in the Recreation Center and/or Fieldhouse annual Maintenance week.
  • Supports the Parker Recreation Center philosophies, policies, procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
