About The Position

Under direction, the employee will be responsible for planning, leading, and delivering structured group exercise classes, recreational activities, or educational programs for participants of various ages (youth, adults, or seniors) in a safe, inclusive, and engaging manner. The employee will design and implement activities that promote health, wellness, skill development, and positive social interaction in alignment with the facility’s mission and standards.

  • Work flexible hours, including mornings, evenings, and weekends as necessary.
  • Demonstrate comfort and adaptability in varying environmental conditions within a fitness facility.
  • Experience instructing fitness classes.
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • First Aid/CPR/AED: Must be currently certified or have the ability to obtain certification.
  • Education or Certification: Many fitness instructors at this level are trained by Fitness Instructors II or III that hold certifications or have obtained a certificate in the classes from accredited organizations. (Skills and instruction may be vetted by a Fitness Instructor II or III.)
  • Knowledge of Class Instruction: Must have formal class training and/or evaluation of skills by a Fitness Instructor II or III. (Possess less than two years of experience without exercise science education.)
  • Ability to demonstrate proper fitness techniques and exercises, physical stamina, and endurance required for active fitness teaching and demonstration; ability to lift and carry fitness equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.; must be capable of walking, bending, stretching, and performing repetitive motions for extended periods.

Responsibilities

  • Developing comprehensive workout programs encompassing cardiovascular exercise, strength training, flexibility, and balance exercises.
  • Demonstrating proper exercise techniques, ensuring clients execute movements correctly to maximize results and prevent injuries.
  • Encouraging and motivating clients throughout their fitness journeys, fostering a positive and supportive environment.
  • Educating clients about healthy lifestyle habits, including proper nutrition, stress management, and injury prevention.
  • Prioritizing safety, maintaining a clean and organized workout environment and offering modifications for exercises when necessary.
  • Providing exceptional customer service by addressing participant questions and concerns professionally and courteously.
  • Fostering an inclusive, welcoming, and motivational atmosphere for all participants.
  • Maintaining accurate attendance records and submitting timely class participation reports.
  • Assisting with registration procedures and processing payments or memberships as required.
  • Preparing class schedules and coordinate with facility management to avoid scheduling conflicts.
  • Ensuring fitness rooms and storage areas are kept organized, clean, and free from hazards.
  • Routinely inspecting and maintaining fitness equipment; report any maintenance needs promptly.
  • Attending mandatory staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Participating in continuing education to remain current with industry standards and certifications.
  • Collaborating effectively with colleagues, facility staff, and management to maintain cohesive program delivery.
  • Assisting in promotional activities and events aimed at increasing community engagement and participation.
  • Adhering to municipal policies, procedures, and guidelines for public facilities.
  • Ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to fitness instruction and facility operations.
  • Communicating with supervisors regarding class performance, participant feedback, and any relevant operational issues.
  • Preparing incident reports promptly and accurately, documenting any injuries or unusual occurrences.
  • Following the instructions of the facility supervisor.
