About The Position

The Idaho Department of Fish & Game is seeking Fisheries Technicians to assist with the Idaho and Salmon and Steelhead Monitoring and Evaluation Study. The positions are based at the Rapid River Hatchery near Riggins, Idaho, with responsibilities including operating a rotary screw trap, assisting with hatchery operations, and conducting creel surveys. The roles are available in two formats: one 8-month benefitted position and two 4-month non-benefitted positions, with specific start and end dates.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver's license.
  • Proficiency in Windows-based software such as Word and Excel.
  • Experience following oral and written instructions, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of life history, anatomy, and ecology of various fish and wildlife species.
  • Experience recording data and interacting with the public in a professional setting.
  • Ability to work independently, be self-motivated, and demonstrate problem-solving ability and safety awareness.

Nice To Haves

  • BS degree in fisheries or related field, or equivalent job experience and training.
  • Experience in aquaculture, operating rotary screw traps, and collecting biological data from salmonids.
  • Experience towing and backing trailers, operating ATVs and 4x4 vehicles, and driving on snow and ice-covered roads.
  • Experience operating chain saws, winches, and a variety of power/hand tools.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and operate a rotary screw trap, including collecting and PIT-tagging juvenile steelhead, measuring and weighing fish, and recording biological information.
  • Assist hatchery staff with daily operations, including sweeping raceways, feeding fish, trapping adult Chinook salmon and steelhead, and monitoring egg development.
  • Conduct creel surveys to interact with anglers and obtain data on fishing effort.
