About The Position

The Fisheries Technician 3 position involves assisting in data collection for fish studies related to the annual work plan, focusing on the movements, habitat use, and population demographics of native fishes in the lower Yellowstone River and throughout Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Region 7. The role requires outdoor work in various weather conditions, operating boats, and conducting field surveys while ensuring accurate data collection and maintenance of equipment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED is preferred.
  • Experience or training in resource management, biology, or closely related fields is preferred.
  • Ability to lift and carry 75 lbs under adverse conditions.
  • Previous boating experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of sampling gear and techniques for larger rivers, streams, and ponds.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with telemetry equipment and data entry software such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Navigation and map skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in data collection for fish studies related to the annual work plan.
  • Examine movements, passage at structures, habitat use, and population demographics of native fishes.
  • Work on a two-man crew to collect large-river fish using accepted protocols and sampling equipment.
  • Implant external tags, internal PIT tags, and transmitters.
  • Collect genetic tissue samples and blood samples from pallid sturgeon.
  • Collect pallid sturgeon broodstock and perform telemetry relocation of native species.
  • Sample hatchery released juvenile pallid sturgeon to assess growth and survival rates.
  • Enter data into established databases and provide weekly summaries of field data to the regional biologist.
  • Maintain equipment and tools without direct supervision.
  • Assist in public outreach events and landowner contacts.
