About The Position

The Fisheries Assistant - AmeriCorps position is designed for individuals seeking to gain experience in the water resources field while serving with the Bureau of Indian Affairs through the Conservation Legacy program. This role involves assisting with long-term monitoring of aquatic ecosystems, supporting fisheries and watershed restoration projects, and engaging in educational outreach efforts. The position is based at the Cherokee National Forest and requires a commitment to a full-time schedule over a 26-week term.

Requirements

  • Must be a member of a federally recognized Indian Tribe, Band, or Village; Alaska Native; or meet specific eligibility criteria.
  • Willingness to undergo and pass a required criminal history check.
  • Must be eligible to serve in AmeriCorps State & National direct Service programs.
  • Availability to work a 40-hour week for the 26-week term.
  • Must be over 18 years of age and a U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien.
  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate required.
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs and work independently in various environmental conditions.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and ability to pass a driver's history check.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in and around water with the ability to swim.
  • Experience with 4x4 vehicles.
  • Experience utilizing ArcGIS Pro and GIS applications.
  • Experience with hand and small powered tools.
  • Experience with backpack-style electrofishing methods.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in maintaining and collecting long-term monitoring site data including macroinvertebrates, substrate, habitat, and large woody debris.
  • Support the Fisheries Biologist and Hydrologist with field equipment maintenance and condition assessments.
  • Participate in fisheries-related stream restoration project tasks.
  • Assist with educational outreach efforts and lead programs with school groups and the public.
  • Collect data pertaining to fish population dynamics and participate in hellbender monitoring surveys.
  • Conduct physical stream habitat surveys and participate in stream restoration projects.
