About The Position

The Fish Hatchery Manager position at Big Springs Trout Hatchery involves overseeing the operations of Montana's largest coldwater production fish hatchery, which raises trout and salmon for stocking in various ponds and lakes throughout the state. The incumbent will manage a multi-species facility, ensuring effective and safe fish culture and stocking activities. Responsibilities include directing subordinates, monitoring fish production programs, and performing skilled fish culture techniques. The position requires a willingness to work under extreme conditions, including outdoor work in all weather, and to live on-site in state housing. The role also involves public relations activities and may require travel to other hatcheries.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in biology, Fisheries, Aquaculture, Environmental Sciences, Zoology, Wildlife, or a related field.
• At least 1 year of job-related experience.
• Basic knowledge of fish biology and fish culture.
• Good speaking, writing, and computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Good math skills, including statistics and algebra.
• Ability to obtain a Montana commercial driver license with tanker and air brake endorsements within six weeks of starting.
• Willingness to accept extreme working conditions and flexible hours.

Responsibilities

• Direct the activities of subordinates and supervise all fish culture and stocking activities.
• Monitor fish production programs for spawning protocols, fish growth, rearing densities, flow indexes, water quality, and fish health.
• Perform skilled and technical fish culture techniques.
• Handle physical demands of the job, including lifting and carrying 50 lb objects.
• Work weekends and holidays in rotation with other employees.
• Engage in public relations activities such as tours and presentations.
