About The Position

The Fish Ecology Technician will work within the Fish and Movement Ecology Lab (PI Dr. Nathan Furey within the Department of Biological Sciences) to conduct fisheries ecology field and lab work. The technician will ensure that core field projects, including rainbow smelt and river herring research, meets research objectives. The technician will be responsible for leading certain aspects of field work, including organization and logistics. The position requires extensive fish handling. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • BS or MS with familiarity and experience with fish handling and fish tagging or marking.
  • Detail oriented and able to work independently but also in small teams.
  • Capable of working in riverine and coastal environments both by wading and small boats.
  • Driver’s License.
  • State Boaters License
  • Experience driving small boats in New England estuaries.
  • Experience with acoustic telemetry
  • Experience with PIT telemetry

Responsibilities

  • Field work includes fish handling and tagging, gear installation, deployment, and recovery, and general boatwork.
  • Field work logistics and preparation: preparing field gear, communicating with field teams, communicating study plans, data entry and QA/QC.
  • Lab work includes processing of fish hard parts (scales, otoliths); assisting in other lab work is possible.
