Fish and Feathers Internship Program seeks to engage young professionals in natural resource careers. Fish and Feathers is a program funded by the National Park Service (NPS) and administered by Environment for the Americas. Our goal is to provide our national park partners with talented interns who are eager to learn and to engage with local communities. The intern will focus on supporting, implementing, and leading community outreach programs that focus on fishing and birding activities. The overall goal is to increase diverse community engagement with NPS partners during the program and in years to come. About this Site: In 2023, Keweenaw National Historical Park (KNHP) and the Calumet Keweenaw Sportsmen’s Club (CKSC) developed a partnership and received a Junior Ranger Angler Grant to facilitate youth fishing opportunities and education and bring together the varied communities of Michigan’s famed Copper Country through a program called Casting to Connect Our Copper Country Communities in 2023. Having successfully completed a combination of fishing day camps within the Calumet Unit of the park and a youth fishing derby to bring together our diverse communities, as well as a connection to the 9,000+ year mining history of the area, KNHP is looking to expand its reach to include underserved communities through other partner sites within the 4 county Copper Country of Michigan. Keweenaw National Historical Park (KNHP) is a partnership park, intertwining federal, state, and local ownerships. A Fish & Feathers Intern at KNHP, will participate in the expansion of the Casting to Connect Our Copper Country Communities program to include other partner sites, including Heritage Sites. KNHP has 23 Heritage Sites within Keweenaw, Houghton, Ontonagon, and Baraga counties. They will work closely with park and partner to do select locations for fishing camps around the Keweenaw and do historical research and create programing that connects the history of each location to participants of the fishing clinics. Each location will provide a unique story to add to the understanding of the richness of KNHP. Calumet Keweenaw Sportsmen’s Club (CKSC) will provide fishing opportunities/programming and the intern will provide historical and cultural programming. In coordination with the CKSC, job duties will include corresponding with representatives from partner sites to develop a schedule of Junior Ranger Angler activities for 2024, assist in youth registration, research historical and cultural connections to selected sites and assist in the development of programming for the events, participate in implementing the programming, document progress (for example photographs, video), and create social media posts. At the end of the project, the intern will develop a final report (review of the project, participation statistics, ideas for improvement).
