S erves as the principal advisor to management staff in all financial matters; providing financial information for decision making and presentations to the Board of Education, government agencies, school system staff, business leaders, parents, community members, and others as necessary. The position has supervisory responsibilities.

  • Supervises and directs the daily accounting operations to include activities related to banking and cash management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, financial reporting, bank reconciliations, inventory, fixed assets, journal entries, capital projects and restricted grants and other accounting duties.
  • Supervises, selects, trains, and evaluates accounting staff including supervisors, accountants, fiscal assistants, and clerks.
  • Provides training in accounting procedures, use of reports, computer systems, and audit schedules.
  • Establishes priorities and operating procedures for accounting staff ensuring the integrity of records maintained for reporting and management requirements.
  • Assists with the development of office policies and procedures.
  • Serves as financial system administrator overseeing daily activities to ensure the integrity of financial accounting records.
  • Maintains system setup tables ensuring strong system of internal controls.
  • Oversees maintenance of the chart of account structure to support timely reporting of financial data.
  • Coordinates interface activities.
  • Reviews system processing logs and operator error messages to assist in the identification and resolution of processing errors.
  • Schedules and oversees testing, updates, and periodic new-year and yearend system processes.
  • Maintains yearend closing calendars.
  • Oversees reconciliation of payrolls to the general ledger and adjusts/corrects accordingly.
  • Reviews and approves various transactions and journal entries.
  • Participates in the selection and implementation of financial applications software.
  • Leads upgrade and testing activities coordinating the efforts of an interdepartmental team of subject matter experts.
  • Studies manual accounting processes and procedures making recommendations for automation.
  • Provides accounting information and guidance to direct reports and other users of the financial system.
  • Uses business intelligence reporting tools to prepare periodic financial reports for account managers, executive directors and the Board of Education.
  • Prepare schedules and footnote disclosure for the annual financial report.
  • Ensures compliance with required government deadlines for regulatory reports, ensures good public relations with public and professional agencies and organizations.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration or finance.
  • Six years of professional experience in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Three years of supervisory experience.
  • Thorough knowledge, skills, and abilities in general accounting, government accounting, and finance, and to keep current in such fields.
  • Thorough knowledge, skills, and abilities in the areas of financial reporting, accounts payable, payroll, benefits, budgeting, and cash control.
  • Thorough knowledge of financial and accounting computer applications and systems.
  • Skill and ability in the preparation of financial reports in conformity with the criteria of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Skill and ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with school, government, and other individuals as required.
  • Skill and ability to organize, plan, and execute work with minimal supervision.
  • Skill and ability to supervise assigned employees.
  • Skill and ability to use personal computer and related software.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Public Finance Officer (CPFO), or Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM) preferred.
