About The Position

This position is for a First Assistant at Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center - Day Surgery Center in Rome. It is a PRN (part-time, as-needed) role focused on supporting clinical needs in surgical procedures. The First Assistant is responsible for a wide range of tasks including preparing the operating room, setting up equipment, maintaining a sterile field, positioning and draping patients, handling tissue, providing surgical exposure, passing instruments, suturing, providing hemostasis, injecting local anesthesia, applying dressings, inserting secondary trocars, and managing casts and splints, all under the direct supervision of a surgeon. Requirements

  • Current CST certification or credentialing by LCC-ST as a Certified First Assistant
  • Associate's degree in surgical technology or related health science field or 8 years of professional experience in First Assist role
  • Completion of a Surgical Technology Program and Assisting Course
  • Documentation of a minimum of 150 surgical cases within the defined specialty area
  • Training obtained under preceptorship from surgeons

Responsibilities

  • Selects supplies and equipment for surgical procedures.
  • Assists in Operating Room team preparation for surgical procedures including room and equipment set up, checking supplies and equipment and opening sterile items.
  • Establishes and maintains sterile field.
  • Positions, preps and drapes the patient.
  • Places urinary drainage catheter.
  • Handles tissue.
  • Provides exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning and sponging techniques under direct supervision of the surgeon.
  • Passes needed instruments, sutures, supplies and other equipment.
  • Sutures and staples subcutaneous tissue and skin.
  • Provides hemostasis by clamping vessels, coagulating bleeding points, ligating vessels and by other means as directly supervised by the surgeon.
  • Injects local anesthesia as directed by the surgeon.
  • Applies dressing.
  • Inserts secondary trocars.
  • Removes and applies casts and splints.
