The Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) is an allied health professional competent of surgical procedures and an integral part of the surgical care team. The CSFA works under the supervision and delegation of a surgeon and alongside the circulating nurse as well as other members of the surgical team to facilitate safe and effective surgical procedures. The CSFA assists with positions of patients to give best exposure for surgical procedure, using stabilizing equipment, when necessary, while maximizing patient comfort and safety. The CSFA is an expert in theory and application of aseptic and sterile technique, knowledgeable of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and surgeon preferences to properly assist the surgeon, providing visualization of the operative site using appropriate method, including manipulation of tissue and materials, retraction, sponging, suctioning, and irrigation. The CSFA utilizes appropriate techniques to achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis, assists with body plane closure, application of wound dressings, and securing of drainage systems. The CSFA may prepare the sterile field, supplies, instrumentation, and equipment. During the surgery, the CSFA helps with a combination of knowledge, participation, anticipation, and critical thinking.
