The Firefighter position at the City of College Station involves performing public safety work to protect life and property through fire suppression, emergency medical services, and technical rescue operations. Firefighters work under the direction of a Company Officer and engage in both emergency and non-emergency situations, including community education and fire prevention activities. The role requires working 48-hour shifts and may involve a 40-hour work week for uncertified firefighters.

  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency situations to fire alarms with assigned company.
  • Participate in fire suppression, technical rescue, and emergency medical services activities.
  • Assist in freeing victims from physically trapped situations and operating pumping apparatus.
  • Respond to emergency calls for specialized services such as hazardous material and confined spaces rescue.
  • Assist in overhauling, salvage, and cleanup operations.
  • Provide EMT level assistance at injury or accident scenes, including administering medical care.
  • Participate in the cleaning, repair, and maintenance of firefighting equipment and facilities.
  • Conduct pre-fire planning of businesses and places of assembly.
  • Establish relationships with building managers to communicate fire codes and safety procedures.
  • Participate in public education and community relation activities, including training classes and fire station tours.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License.
  • Certified Firefighter with current certification by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) in Basic Structure Fire Suppression or above.
  • Current certification with the Texas Department of State Health Services as Emergency Medical Technician (EMT - Basic) or above.
  • Knowledge and proficiency of Emergency Medical Technician basic life support procedures and paramedic support procedures/protocols.
  • Ability to think and act quickly and effectively in emergencies.
  • Ability to deal effectively with people under stressful situations.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices and procedures of modern firefighting, technical rescue, EMS, and hazardous material techniques.
  • Knowledge of city streets, water supply systems, and fire suppression systems.
  • Certified Firefighter/Paramedic - Highly preferred.
  • $5,000 Hire-On Bonus for Certified Firefighter Paramedic after successful completion of FTEP.
  • Lateral credit for 1 - 4 years of service for certified external hires.
