The purpose of this classification is to respond to requests for emergency assistance relative to fires, alarms, and rescues. Exercises sound judgment in performing fire suppression and rescue tasks. This position generally functions at the task level to stabilize emergency incidents. This position requires considerable training in the operation and maintenance of hand tools and power equipment. Work often includes performing strenuous, hazardous tasks during emergency situations under a wide range of environmental conditions under stressful, high-risk conditions. Reports to the Fire Commander.

  • Operates equipment and performs firefighting duties in a safe and controlled manner.
  • Performs firefighting duties: extinguishes fires; performs vehicle extrication; performs technical rope rescue; manages Hazardous-Materials scenes; and acts as incident command until relieved by superior officer.
  • Maintains all fire equipment and apparatus: checks and replenishes fluids in apparatus; conducts fire engine pump test; tests fire hoses; rolls dried fire hose; checks and cleans all equipment on apparatus; fills self-contained breathing apparatus cylinders; cleans all equipment and apparatus, including self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Cleans and maintains fire station and related equipment and grounds: checks and maintains station generator; and mows grass.
  • Assists in other department operations: assists with dispatch operations; trains new firefighters; maintains fire inspections and preplans; assists in removing equipment from decommissioned patrol units; assists with annual fire hydrant testing; and installs smoke alarms.
  • Attends departmental trainings and departmental meetings.
  • Gives tours of assigned fire station, demonstrates fire equipment and apparatus, and participates in other education programs for various groups and general public: participates in community functions and fire prevention events.
  • Receives and/or reviews various records and reports.
  • Prepares and/or processes fire reports, training reports, incident reports, vehicle maintenance reports, inspection reports, memos, correspondence, etc.: provides a data log; and enters information into a database.
  • Refers to equipment check sheets, building inspections, fire reports, and emergency response guidebooks.
  • Operates all trucks and equipment and utilizes all fire suppression equipment, hand tools, air compressor, generators, fans, self-contained breathing apparatus, and various office machines including a calculator, computer, two-way radio, etc.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as City personnel, volunteers, other fire departments, community groups, civic and professional organizations, school groups, other emergency response agencies, law enforcement agencies, the general public.
  • Complies with established policies, procedures and safe work practices: follows safety training and instructions provided by their supervisor; wears and maintains all personal protective equipment required for classification; and immediately reports any unsafe work practices or unsafe conditions, as well as any on-the-job injury or illnesses.
  • After normal business hours and on weekends and holidays, monitors headquarters and interacts with the public to get them to provide information and directions.
  • Assists with putting out barricades and traffic cones during special events.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • High school Diploma or GED required, with vocational or technical training in fire science or a related field; supplemented by one year of experience in firefighting; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Class E driver’s license.
  • Must possess and maintain the following additional certifications or licensures: Firefighter I; CPR and First Aid; vehicle emergency response certifications; emergency vehicle driver training; pump operations I; rapid intervention crew; positive pressure ventilation; pipeline emergencies; utility emergencies; and basic auto extrication.
  • Possession of Firefighter II certification is preferred, and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain Firefighter II certification after they are hired.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all City or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.
