About The Position

The Firefighter position involves performing general duties in fire prevention and protection of life and property. The role requires responding to fire alarms, operating firefighting equipment, and providing emergency medical assistance as part of a team under the supervision of a superior officer. Firefighters are expected to maintain physical fitness and participate in ongoing training related to firefighting methods and equipment operation.

Requirements

  • Must be a citizen of the United States or a resident alien with the right to work in the U.S.
  • High school diploma or valid equivalency certificate required; Bachelor's or Associate degree in Fire Science or EMS preferred.
  • Current State of Michigan Paramedic License or National Registry EMT - Paramedic license, or documentation of being within six months of graduation from a Paramedic/ACLS curriculum.
  • Possess a Conference of Western Wayne or EMPCO Firefighter written test score.
  • Possess (or be in the process of obtaining) the Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) or equivalent agility test issued within the last 12 months.
  • Normal visual functions and acuity in each eye, correctable to 20/20 with eyeglasses.
  • Free from physical defects, chronic diseases, or mental instabilities that may impair performance.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator's or basic commercial driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred at the time of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to fire alarms with a fire company.
  • Prepares to fight fire by connecting hoses to hydrants or pumps and joining hose sections and nozzles.
  • Enters burning buildings and operates nozzles to direct streams of water on fires.
  • Operates equipment for forcible entry into locked buildings.
  • Operates hand fire extinguishers and similar equipment to extinguish fires.
  • Operates pumps to maintain adequate water volume and pressure.
  • Raises, lowers, and climbs ladders as needed.
  • Ventilates burning buildings to carry off smoke and gases.
  • Rescues individuals and provides appropriate emergency medical assistance.
  • Performs property conservation operations such as placing salvage covers and removing debris.
  • May drive ladder trucks, pumper trucks, and emergency trucks in response to fire alarms.
  • Attends instruction sessions concerning firefighting methods, equipment operation, and first aid.
  • Administers first response first aid to injured or afflicted persons.
