About The Position

The City of Birmingham, MI (EOE) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Firefighter/EMT-B, a Birmingham Firefighter Association union position. Duties include protecting life and property, fire suppression, emergency medical care, maintaining equipment, apparatus and building; participating in daily drills, fire prevention, public education & miscellaneous duties as assigned. The Birmingham Fire Department is an ISO Class 2 department that operates on a 24-hour shift schedule and includes 34 members across 3 units. The department staffs two (2) state-of-the-art fire stations and is equipped with modern, high-quality tools and apparatus. Firefighters rotate through truck assignments, providing broad exposure and frequent opportunities for hands-on training. The department actively participates with their mutual aid group OAKWAY in fire training and response with the combined technical rescue, hazmat, and peer support teams. The department also offers additional special assignments in areas such as community risk reduction, fire prevention, and EMS coordination.

Requirements

  • Possession of high school diploma or equivalent
  • State of Michigan Firefighter I & II Certification
  • Vision correctable to 20/20 in both eyes
  • Valid Michigan Operator's License with satisfactory driving record
  • Physical condition appropriate for the position
  • Applicants must pass the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) through the Conference of Western Wayne (CWW) Firefighter Testing Program prior to date of hire. CPAT requirement waived for candidates currently employed as full-time firefighters in another jurisdiction.

  • Base pay for a Firefighter/EMT-B is $66,102.30 to start, $72,006.29 at 12 months, $77,910.22 at 24 months, and top pay of $83,538.31 at 36 months. Candidates with prior experience may qualify to start at the 24-month pay level.
