ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Performs firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose and performing fire suppression, containment and extinguishment tasks. Also performs emergency aid activities for the ill and injured, including basic life support and providing other assistance as required. Works under the general supervision of a Fire Department Officer. Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials and all members of the general public. Participates in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, technical rescue, wildland firefighting and related subjects. Receives and relays fire calls and alarms. Operates computers, radio and other communication equipment. Participates in the inspection of buildings, hydrants and other structures in fire prevention programs. Maintains fire equipment, apparatus and facilities. Performs minor repairs to departmental equipment, apparatus and facilities. Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; cleans and washes walls and floors, cares for grounds around station, washes and dries hose, washes, cleans, polishes, maintains and tests apparatus/ equipment as well as other duties as assigned. Assists in developing plans and education for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, emergency communications, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, technical rescue, wildland firefighting and emergency aid activities. Presents education programs to the community on safety, medical and fire prevention topics. Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water and removing debris. Perform shift work in a rotation of days, evenings and nights including weekends and holidays. Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the Department and the City. Attendance at work is an essential function of this position. NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Upon completion of probationary period, may assist in department supervisory and administrative activities as assigned. Upon completion of probationary period, may assist to coordinate, instruct, or supervise the work of new recruits or other department personnel, as assigned.
