  • Learning and demonstrating proficiency in firefighting, emergency medical services, technical rescue, incident command system, and hazardous materials.
  • Working under close supervision according to set procedures.
  • Completing required training programs as directed by the Fire Division.
  • Preparing written documents and reports such as special reports, accident or investigation reports.
  • Communicating effectively with the public and maintaining harmonious working relationships with diverse groups.
  • Operating fire and emergency response equipment.
  • High school graduation or successful completion of GED.
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age at the time of application.
  • Successful completion of HRFA or other Division-approved fire academy.
  • Certification as Virginia Advanced EMT (EMT-Intermediate or paramedic preferred).
  • Completion of Basic Life Support Attendant-In-Charge (BLS AIC) program and Advanced Life Support Field Training Program (ALSFTP) for Advanced EMT providers.
  • Completion of Hazardous Materials-Operations, Emergency Vehicle Operation Course (EVOC), and Driver/Pump Operator (DPO) course.
  • Completion of FEMA IS 100, 200, 700, and 800.
  • Must meet the required medical standards provided by the City by a licensed physician.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
  • Must complete the Fire Division's physical agility test and pass a character background investigation and polygraph examination.
  • Current performance appraisal of 'achieved/met' or higher.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and coherently with a diverse community.
  • Skills in observation and memory.
  • Ability to work under hazardous conditions.
  • Enrollment in the Virginia Retirement System.
