Cheyenne Fire Rescue provides fire suppression, emergency medical services, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, and community risk reduction to over 65,000 residents and visitors who live and work in Cheyenne. Cheyenne is the capital of Wyoming and the largest city in Wyoming. Cheyenne Fire Rescue was founded in 1909 and has grown to 100 members operating out of six (6) fire stations. CFR deploys five (5) engine companies, one (1) ladder company, one (1) support unit, one (1) battalion chief, one (1) type 6 brush truck, and one (1) type 3 wildland engine. CFR operates five (5) specialty teams including a 17-member technical rescue team, a 27-member hazardous materials response team, a Tactical EMS team (TEMS), Wildland team, and a Community Paramedic Program. CFR responds to over 10,000 calls for service annually. Cheyenne Fire Rescue became a CAPSE Accredited Fire Department in March of 2025. Cheyenne was the first municipal fire department in the state of Wyoming to achieve this. There are only 335 accredited agencies world-wide. Area Information: Cheyenne Fire Rescue is located in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Cheyenne is approximately 100 miles north of Denver, Colorado, and 45 miles east of Laramie, Wyoming, the home to the University of Wyoming. Cheyenne is the largest city in Wyoming and the capital of the state. An outdoorsman’s paradise, the area offers world class hunting, fishing, rock climbing, mountain biking, skiing, and more. The city of 65,400 residents lies adjacent to F.E. Warren Air Force Base and sits at 6300 feet elevation. Historic downtown is host to many cultural celebrations and Cheyenne is the home of Cheyenne Frontier Days, the world’s largest outdoor rodeo and western celebration. Requirements

  • Age: At least 18 years of age on the date of examination
  • Citizenship Required: Applicants must be a citizen of the United States of America
  • High School Grad/GED: Applicants must possess a high school diploma or the equivalent
  • Valid Driver's License: A valid Driver’s License (from any state) is required
  • Ability to Read/Speak English: Yes
  • Vision: Correctable to 20/20
  • Academy Certification: Fire Academy after hire
  • Prior Experience: No prior experience required
  • Legal Record: Not have been convicted of any felony
  • Necessary Certifications and CPAT: A valid, current CPAT card is not required to test. HOWEVER, a valid, current CPAT card is required to be submitted with the Application to the City of Cheyenne, no exceptions. Per department policy CPAT cards are valid for one year from issue date and must be awarded by an accredited CPAT agency.
  • Residency: Upon hiring, members will be required to be a resident and be domiciled within a sixty-mile radius of the Cheyenne Fire Rescue Headquarters Station 1, located at 716 West 19th Street, Cheyenne, Wyoming. Residency requirements must be met within three months of the member's date of hire or six months within the discretion of the Fire Chief.

Responsibilities

  • Provides outstanding service and performs duties as necessary to best serve citizens in the Cheyenne Fire Rescue response area.
  • First responder to fire alarms, EMS, and other emergency calls.
  • Inspects buildings for fire hazards and compliance with Fire Prevention Ordinances, resulting in directing fire regulation violations to be corrected.
  • Maintains fire apparatus, quarters, buildings, equipment, and grounds.
  • Provides EMS treatment in accordance with Wyoming Laws, WDHS Rules and Regulations, Regional Protocols, and Base Station direction.
  • Positions and climbs ladders to gain access to upper levels of buildings or to assist individuals from burning or unsafe structures.
  • Creates openings in buildings for ventilation or entrance.
  • Protects property from water and smoke damage by use of waterproof salvage covers and fans.
  • Participates in drills, demonstrations, and courses in hydraulics, pump operation and maintenance, and firefighting techniques.
  • Drives and operates firefighting vehicles and equipment.
  • Conducts public education activities and responds to calls or inquiries from the general public.
  • Uses computers for preparing reports and e-mail communication.
