About The Position

The City of Sharonville has immediate vacancies in the classification of Firefighter/Paramedic. The Sharonville Fire Department is an ISO Class 2 department serving the community from three fire stations through response to more than 5,000 responses annually. The City Of Sharonville is conveniently located fifteen miles north of downtown Cincinnati.  I-75 and I-275 intersect in Sharonville, and I-275 intersects with I-71 just two miles east of the Sharonville city limits.  Sharonville is in both Hamilton and Butler counties. Due to industry, retail, schools, motels, and the Sharonville Convention Center the permanent population of 14,500 swells to more than 40,000 on a daily basis.  The City prides itself on being a vibrant and close-knit community that strongly supports its businesses and visitors. Sharonville’s tax structure (no residential property tax for City operation) and the existing business foundation have been catalysts for driving the growth of the City. Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age and less than 41 years of age on the date of appointment.
  • Applicant must be a citizen of the United States on the date of appointment to a vacancy.
  • Applicants must be a high school graduate or possess a General Educational Development (GED) certification.  A copy of the GED must be submitted with the application for employment.  Applicants are not required to have any college classes or a college degree.
  • Applicants must possess a currently effective driver license on the date of appointment to a vacancy.  Following appointment, employees must maintain an effective driver license in compliance with Ohio law and the requirements of the City Of Sharonville insurance carrier.
  • Applicants must be able to read and speak English.
  • Applicants are required to have a vision rating of 20/20 or corrected to 20/20.
  • Possession of high school diploma or GED.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license in compliance with Ohio law.
  • Citizen of the United States on the date of appointment.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and less than 41 years of age on the date of appointment.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Ohio Firefighter I and Ohio EMT-B certifications.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Ohio EMT-P and  Firefighter II or, the ability to acquire within the assigned probationary period.
  • Successful completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) 100, 200, 700, and 800 within 90 days from appointment.
  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED,
  • Possession and maintenance of valid Ohio Firefighter I and Ohio EMT-B certifications,
  • Possession and maintenance of valid Ohio EMT-P or the ability to acquire within assigned probationary period,
  • Successful completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) 100, 200, 700, 800 within 90 days from date of hire.
  • Valid Driver’s license: must maintain insurability as set forth by the City’s motor vehicle liability insurance requirements,
  • Must retain all certifications required of the position and the State of Ohio. An employee in this capacity is responsible for ensuring that all certifications are current and that all necessary continuing education requirements are met.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of certification in any fire service educational procedure is preferred but not required.
  • Prior experience in fire services is preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • While wearing personal protective ensembles and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), performing fire-fighting tasks (e.g., hose line operations, extensive crawling, lifting and carrying heavy objects, ventilating roofs or walls using power or hand tools, forcible entry), rescue operations, and other emergency response actions under stressful conditions, including working in extremely hot or cold environments for prolonged time periods.
  • Wearing an SCBA, which includes a demand valve type positive pressure facepiece or HEPA filter mask, which requires the ability to tolerate increased respiratory workloads.
  • Exposure to toxic fumes, irritants, particulates, biological (i.e. infectious) and nonbiological hazards, and heated gases, despite the use of personal protective ensembles and SCBA.
  • Climbing 8 or more flights of stairs while wearing a fire protective ensemble, including SCBA, weighing at least 50 lb. (22.6 kg) or more and carrying equipment/tools weighing an additional 20-40 lb. (9-18 kg).
  • Wearing a fire protective ensemble, including SCBA, that is encapsulating and insulated, which will result in significant fluid loss that frequently progresses to clinical dehydration and can elevate core temperature levels exceeding 102.2°F (39°C).
  • While wearing personal protective ensembles and SCBA, searching, finding, and rescue-dragging or carrying victims ranging from newborns to adults weighing over 200 lb. (90kg) to safety despite hazardous conditions and low visibility.
  • While wearing personal protective ensembles and SCBA, advancing water filled hose lines up to 2 ½ in (65 mm) in diameter from fire apparatus to occupancy [approximately 150 ft (50 m)], which can involve negotiating multiple flights of stairs, ladders, and other obstacles.
  • While wearing personal protective ensembles and SCBA, climbing ladders, operating from heights, walking, running, or crawling, in the dark, along narrow and uneven surfaces that might be wet or icy, and operating in proximity to electrical power lines or other hazards.
  • Unpredictable emergency requirements for prolonged periods of extreme physical exertion without benefit of warm-up, scheduled res periods, meals, access to medication(s), or hydration.
  • Operating fire apparatus or other vehicles in an emergency mode with emergency lights and sirens.
  • Critical, time-sensitive, complex problem solving during physical exertion in stressful, hazardous environments, including hot, dark, tightly enclosed spaces, that is further aggravated by fatigue, flashing lights, sirens, and other distractions.
  • Ability to communicate (give and comprehend verbal orders) while wearing personal protective ensembles and SCBA under conditions of high background noise, poor visibility, and drenching from hose lines and/or fixed protection systems (sprinklers).
  • Functioning as an integral component of a team, where sudden incapacitation of a member can result in mission failure or in risk of injury or death to civilians or other team members.
  • Working in shifts, including during nighttime, which can extend beyond 24 hours.
  • Abide by the Standards of Conduct as defined by City Administration.
  • Assists with proper maintenance of fire stations, apparatus, and equipment.
  • As a member of a fire department or rescue crew responds to all fire alarms, accidents, or emergencies.
  • Answers all emergency calls in a medic unit or fire apparatus and administers to victims appropriate emergency medical care consistent with training and approved medical protocols.
  • Participates in a variety of in-service, general and specialized training courses and drills.
  • Enforces fire prevention ordinances and regulations.
  • Assists in the inspection of business establishments, churches, schools, residence and other buildings for fires and safety hazards.
  • Assists in educating the public regarding fire and life safety measures.
  • Inspects assigned district to assure thorough knowledge of all streets, alleys, and buildings.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of reports, logs, evaluations and schedules.
  • Works under the supervision of an officer, and in accordance with Fire Department standards and rules.
  • Prepares and submits reports and forms regarding fires, fire suppression, alarms, EMS details, inspections, supplies, equipment and other related matters. Writes violation notices and related follow up correspondences.
  • Tests fire hydrants and records data.
  • Performs related work as required.
