About The Position

Under basic direction, perform firefighting operations and provide high quality patient care to improve patient outcomes and protect life and property. Respond to a variety of fire and emergency and non-emergency medical service calls including cardiac arrests, pediatric emergencies, structure fires, traffic collisions, hazardous materials incidents, building collapses, wildland fires, and requests for public assistance. Demonstrate effective teamwork while operating in a variety of fire suppression and medical equipment and in performance of station and equipment maintenance, and other related duties, as required to meet the mission of the Victorville Fire Department. Demonstrate an ability to solve practical problems through critical thinking. Demonstrate an ability to recognize dangerous and hazardous situations, take decisive actions in timely, calm, and professional manner; perform related duties, as required. Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of a California State Fire Marshal Accredited Basic Firefighter Academy or equivalent.
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Must possess a valid California class "C" driver's license upon hire and maintain throughout the length of employment with the City of Victorville.
  • As an alternative to a California driver's license, if the candidate or incumbent is an out of state resident (outside of California) he/she must maintain the appropriate license equivalent to a California class C.
  • California State Fire Marshal (CSFM) Firefighter 1
  • State certification is required upon completion of the VFD training academy.
  • Proof of enrollment or completion of State accredited Fire Academy is required with application.
  • Paramedic License with ACLS Certification
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California State Paramedic License or National Registry Paramedic certification. If qualifying under National Registry must obtain California licensing and certification prior to time of employment.
  • Must possess a valid, current Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certificate.
  • Eligibility for Inland Counties Emergency Medical Agency (ICEMA) accredited paramedic status is required by completion of the Victorville Fire Department Academy and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • "Red-Card" within 12-months
  • Must be eligible for certification under the California Incident Command Certification System (CICCS) as a Firefighter II within 12-months of hire.
  • Physical Agility Requirement
  • A valid CPAT or Biddle exam completed within 12 months as of December 1, 2025.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in fire suppression, rescue, and Emergency Medical Services/Paramedic is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to fire and medical emergencies.
  • Perform all phases of fire suppression and pre-hospital medical clinical work.
  • Respond and participate with working groups and special teams to continually improve operations.
  • Perform rescue, ventilation, overhaul, salvage, and clean-up activities at fire scene.
  • Place fire hoses, set ladders, operate fire streams, ventilate, and enter burning structures to extinguish fires and rescue victims.
  • Operate pneumatic and auxiliary equipment such as generators or pumps.
  • Respond to hazardous materials and infectious control incidents.
  • Provide competent and compassionate Paramedic level patient care, assessments, and treatment regimens.
  • Operate cardiac monitor and perform low frequency high risk patient interventions and treatments.
  • Administer medications by appropriate route per protocol.
  • Follow department's medical director's operational policies and guidelines.
  • Follow and understand Inland County EMS Agency protocols.
  • Provide clear medical communication with hospital staff and other EMS stake holders.
  • Prepare, submit, and maintain electronic and hand-written reports on fire suppression activities, incidents, accidents, patient care records, and other job-related activities.
  • Perform station maintenance, maintain station living quarters, grounds, and exterior areas in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Operate, inspect, and maintain equipment used to carry out job responsibilities.
  • Perform minor repairs on apparatus or equipment inside and outside of facilities.
  • Order necessary supplies.
  • Conduct and participate in fire and medical training and exercises.
  • Participate in medical care delivery continuing education.
  • Develop skills and competency in fire suppression, pre-hospital medicine, apparatus operation, rescue operations, hazardous materials response, and other related areas.
  • Conduct classes on relevant levels of emergency medical service delivery to department and community members, as needed.
  • Maintain electronic and hand-written records and logs of work in-progress and completed.
  • Prepare statistical and analytical reports, as required.
  • Stay current on new innovations relative to firefighting, fire prevention, and delivery of pre-hospital care.
  • Participate in testing of a variety of department equipment, including but not limited to fire hose, ladders, fire pumps, breathing apparatus, medical equipment, and other job-related equipment.
  • Participate in public education activities related to Fire Department functions, Community Risk Reduction initiatives, and techniques.
  • Participate with local college training programs, as needed.
  • Participate and support department Continual Quality Improvement program.
  • Safely operate City vehicles and equipment.
