About The Position

Under the direction of a Battalion Chief this position exists to perform fire suppression and emergency medical services in the protection of life and property; to fight fires and provide emergency medical service; to operate and assist in maintaining firefighting equipment, apparatus and facilities; to participate in rescue activities; to perform a variety of housekeeping activities; and to perform related work as required. An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties which an employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

Requirements

  • Firefighter I &II certification.
  • High School Diploma.
  • State of Michigan EMT license.
  • Valid Michigan driver's license.
  • Operational Level Hazmat Certification.
  • CPR/AED Certification.
  • Successful Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) or Oakland Physical Agility Test (OPAT).
  • High degree of verbal and written communication skills including report writing.
  • Knowledge of geography, streets, and principal locations in the City.
  • The ability to work tactfully and in a positive manner with all three divisions of the department.
  • Ability to read and understand written instructions as well as write fire and EMS reports.
  • Ability to operate basic computer software and records management systems utilized for various reports.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to fire situations, connect and control hose lines and nozzles, erect ladders, and utilize extinguishers, power saws, hooks, lifelines and other tools.
  • Drive fire apparatus' to incidents; operate pumps, aerial ladders, and auxiliary equipment; lay hose and direct hose streams, ventilate buildings, perform interior searches, rescue and suppression activities, salvage and overhaul operations, and other tasks assigned by the incident commander.
  • Actively clean, repair, inspect and maintain firefighting apparatus, equipment, fire stations and grounds.
  • Respond to rescue and emergency medical calls, render emergency care to the sick and injured, perform a wide variety of rescue operations, including vehicle extrications, industrial entrapments and other procedures.
  • Perform additional work as required by the Battalion Chief.
