About The Position

The South Dakota Wildland Fire Division is seeking seasonal employees for the Firefighter - Engine Crew position based in Lead, SD. The primary responsibility of this role is to staff a type 3 or 6 engine and assist in various wildland fire management activities, including fire suppression, presuppression tasks, and maintenance of fire management equipment. This position requires physical fitness and the ability to work irregular hours, including weekends and holidays, as part of a team dedicated to fire safety and management in the Black Hills area.

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years old by the date of hire.
• Pass the arduous physical fitness standard (Pack Test) for wildland firefighters.
• Possess a valid driver's license.
• Complete a pre-hire drug screening before hire.
• Have or be able to obtain S130/S190/L180 certification.
• Responsible for transportation to and from work and associated costs.
• Provide own wildland fire boots with specific requirements.

Nice To Haves

• EMT or CDL certification (additional pay of $0.60/hr available).

Responsibilities

• Staff a type 3 or 6 engine for wildland fire management activities.
• Assist Fire Management Staff in suppressing wildland fires in the Black Hills area.
• Participate in presuppression activities such as equipment maintenance and fuel reduction projects.
• Engage in fire training and prescribed burning projects.
• Maintain facilities and equipment for the fire season.
