About The Position

Begin a career in the Fire Service as a Firefighter/EMT Trainee with the City of Joplin. Attend the Joplin Fire Academy to obtain internationally recognized and accredited Fire and EMS certifications. Under general to limited supervision, you will prepare and respond to emergency calls that include all types of fires, vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, and any type of rescue to protect life and property.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Knowledge of fire suppression methods, techniques, and practices; use of various tools, equipment, and apparatus used in fire suppression, rescue and emergency medical operations.
  • Skill in following complex oral and written instructions, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Possess and maintain a valid state issued driver's license.
  • Certification from an International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (ProBoard) accredited agency as a Firefighter I and II is preferred, but not required.
  • Certification as a Missouri EMT-Basic from the State of Missouri is preferred, but not required.

  • Firefighter I and II completion is preferred.
  • Prior experience in fire suppression or emergency medical services is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of fire suppression activities at the fire scene including deploying hose lines, operating nozzles, directing water streams, and raising and climbing ladders; utilizes a variety of hand and power equipment.
  • Participates in a variety of training activities to maintain and improve the level of fire suppression, emergency medical skills, and physical conditioning.
  • Performs a variety of emergency rescue activities at fire, accident, medical, or other emergency scenes.
  • Administers emergency medical care at the appropriate level.
  • Performs a variety of cleaning, maintenance, and repair tasks necessary to keep the fire station, apparatus, and related equipment clean, stored properly, fully functional and operating safely.
