About The Position

The New Berlin Fire Department was established in 1954 by town residents dedicated to serving the community. In 2001 the NBFD began the transition from a volunteer to combination department to meet the growing needs of the city. On July 31, 2008, the NBFD began 24/7 paramedic coverage. The department has continued to expand our current staffing which currently includes 54 full-time sworn personnel, and two civilian employees. Full-time line personnel work a 48/96 shift schedule responding to approximately 5,000 calls annually. Our personnel are highly trained and motivated individuals who are consistently looking at ways to improve our service delivery. Through education, training, and statistical data collection we are continually analyzing how to best provide services to the citizens of New Berlin in a cost-effective manner. New Berlin is well served by a dedicated, community-focused City Council and staff who bring diverse experiences and are committed to the betterment of our community. Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Hold and maintain a valid state of Wisconsin driver's license.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 60 college credits within three (3) years of appointment.
  • Wisconsin State Certified Firefighter I or State of Wisconsin recognized equivalent.
  • Wisconsin licensed EMT-Basic, Advanced or Paramedic.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) Independent Study 100, 200, 700, 800
  • Must reside within twenty (20) miles from the jurisdictional boundary of the City of New Berlin within three (3) months of successful completion of initial hire probationary period.
  • Wisconsin State Certified Firefighter II, Driver Operator Pumper, Driver Operator Aerial and Fire Inspector I or State of Wisconsin recognized equivalent
  • Successfully complete the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) within 12 months from date of hire
  • Obtain and maintain Wisconsin Paramedic license throughout employment

Nice To Haves

  • Wisconsin State Certified Emergency Services Instructor I, Fire Officer I and NIMS 300, 400 are highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Comply with all department policies and procedures
  • Understand and apply concepts identified with the New Berlin Fire Department vision, mission, and values
  • Able to read, write, listen, and comprehend instructions, information or reports
  • Effectively communicate with department personnel, other city departments, private citizens
  • Must be able to carry out orders and assignments in both non-emergency and emergency situations
  • Respond to all types of emergency incidents to provide; life safety, incident stabilization and property conservation
  • Meet all essential job functions requirements of NFPA Standards 1001 and 1500
  • Operate hand and specialized power tools and equipment while wearing personal protective equipment to suppress fires, rescue and extricate victims, administer advanced out of hospital emergency medical care to patients, control and contain hazardous materials releases, and perform various other task as assigned
  • Must meet the requirements under NFPA 1500 and OSHA 1910.134 for wearing the department provided respirator
  • Maintain personal fitness consistent with performing all essential functions at a high level of safety and efficiency
  • Work to prevent emergency occurrence through participation fire inspections, code enforcement, public education, and community risk reduction programs
  • Drive and operate all fire department apparatus and equipment upon successful completion of department certification process
  • Maintain department apparatus, fire stations and other department facilities, grounds, and equipment as assigned
  • Read and study material to remain current on topics related to fire prevention, suppression, technical rescue, fire and life safety codes, and public safety education
  • Participate in various classroom and training programs to develop and maintain required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Continuously pursue professional development opportunities
  • Promote a positive atmosphere in all aspects of the department, one that helps one another and builds a team that works together for the common goal of professionalism and exceptional service to the people we serve
  • At times may be required to work outside normal scheduled hours and work extended hours to accomplish the department's vision, mission, and values
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required
