About The Position

The Fire Systems & Maintenance Technician is responsible for the inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of fire detection, suppression, and prevention systems within a sawmill and wood processing facility. This role plays a critical part in protecting personnel, equipment, and facilities from fire risks associated with combustible wood dust, heavy machinery, and industrial operations. The technician will also support general maintenance activities to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient plant operations.

Requirements

  • Technical certification or diploma in Fire Protection Systems, Electrical, Mechanical Maintenance, or related field.
  • Minimum 2–5 years of experience in industrial fire protection systems (experience in sawmill or wood processing environment preferred).
  • Working knowledge of NFPA standards and industrial safety regulations.
  • Experience with sprinkler systems, fire alarm panels, and suppression systems.
  • Basic electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Valid driver’s license (if required).
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • High attention to detail and safety awareness.
  • Ability to work in dusty, noisy industrial environments.
  • Good communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a maintenance team.
  • Willingness to respond to emergency call-outs if required.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, test, and maintain fire detection systems (smoke, heat, flame detectors).
  • Service and maintain fire suppression systems, including sprinklers, deluge systems, foam systems, and dry chemical systems.
  • Inspect and maintain fire pumps, hydrants, hose reels, and portable fire extinguishers.
  • Ensure spark detection and dust explosion prevention systems are functioning properly.
  • Perform routine inspections of dust collection systems to minimize fire hazards.
  • Maintain fire alarm panels and troubleshoot system faults.
  • Coordinate third-party inspections and regulatory compliance checks.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and inspection logs.
  • Ensure compliance with local fire codes, OSHA regulations, NFPA standards, and company safety policies.
  • Assist with preventive and corrective maintenance of mill equipment when required.
  • Identify fire hazards related to machinery, conveyors, kilns, and dust systems.
  • Support shutdown maintenance activities.
  • Participate in root cause investigations for fire-related incidents.
  • Provide recommendations for fire risk reduction and system upgrades.
  • Maintain and repair water-based fire suppression systems (wet, dry, deluge, pre-action).
  • Fabricate, assemble, install, and maintain pipes, valves, and sprinkler heads.
  • Conduct required NFPA-compliant inspections (quarterly, annual, 5-year) to ensure proper function and identify deficiencies.
  • Diagnose issues, replace worn components, and repair faults in fire sprinkler systems.
  • Ensure all systems meet local, state, and NFPA codes. Prepare detailed reports on inspection findings and communicate with all stakeholders regarding impairments, repairs, system operations, and safety requirements.
