About The Position

A Union 669 Foreman position (Road Sprinkler Fitters) involves leading a crew installing, maintaining, and repairing fire sprinkler systems, requiring union membership, strong leadership, technical skill in NFPA codes, and often willingness to travel, overseeing apprentices, and ensuring safety/quality on projects. Requirements

  • Union Membership: Must be a member or willing to join UA Local Union 669.
  • Experience: Typically requires completion of the 5-year apprenticeship or equivalent.
  • Skills: Strong leadership, problem-solving, mechanical aptitude, blueprint reading, and teamwork.
  • Physical: Ability to perform physical labor, potentially lifting heavy objects.
  • Travel: Often requires travel, sometimes for extended periods away from home, as 669 covers "road" work.
  • Ability to stay on feet all day
  • Ability to lift/carry 50+ pounds with no fear of climbing or heights
  • Ability to work overhead while holding heavy pipe for extended period of time
  • Understand basic measurements, capability of learning to read construction drawings, plans

Nice To Haves

  • NICET Certification (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies).
  • Fire suppression system certification (state-specific).
  • OSHA 10, 17, 17A, 96,1 and 99 fire codes and building codes or OSHA 30 certification.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and guide a team of journeymen and apprentices on job sites.
  • Install, maintain, and repair various fire sprinkler systems (wet, dry, foam, etc.).
  • Enforce OSHA and NFPA standards, ensuring all work meets codes (NFPA 13, 25) and regulations.
  • Read plans, manage timelines, coordinate logistics (materials, schedules), and report progress.
  • Liaise with clients, managers, and crew; train apprentices.

  • Cut and install pipe, fittings and valves using saws, pipe cutter, hammer, hammer drill and chisel, torch and pipe cutting machine.
  • Threads pipe, using pipe threading machine
  • Bends pipe, using pipe bending tools and pipe bending machine
  • Assembles and installs a variety of metal and non-metal pipes, tubes, fittings. Including iron, steel, copper and plastic.
  • Connects pipes using threaded, caulked, soldered, brazed, fused or cemented joints and hand tools.
  • Secures pipes to structure with brackets, clamps and hangers, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Installs and maintains hydraulic and pneumatic components of machines and equipment, such as pumps and cylinders using hand tools.
  • Increases pressure in pipe system and observes connected pressure gauge to test system or leaks.
  • May weld pipe supports structural steel members.
