About The Position

The University of Iowa Facilities Management is seeking a highly motivated person to work as a Fire Safety Technician at either the Fire Safety Technician I, Fire Safety Technician II, or Fire Safety Technician III classification based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. Under direct supervision the person in this role will perform skilled and semi-skilled duties required for inspection, installation, maintenance, and repair of fire safety equipment. Utilizes plans for proper conformance with fire safety equipment codes and inspections of facilities to determine additional needs for fire safety equipment. This position is performed fully on campus. About Facilities Management: Facilities Management (FM) is a service unit of approximately 500 employees who work behind the scenes, 24 hours a day, serving the University of Iowa as stewards for our downtown Iowa City campus and Oakdale campus in Coralville. Requirements

  • Fire Safety Technician I: High school graduation or equivalent. Two years of post-high school training in the basic skills of fire prevention or any combination of training and experience in fire prevention work from which comparable knowledge and ability is acquired, or Certified as a Fire Inspector 1 or NICET Certification Level 1 in a Fire Alarm/Protection System.
  • Fire Safety Technician II: Two years of experience in electrical or control trade, including apprenticeship; or two years related experience, which includes regular participation in activities such as project planning, designing, ensuring code compliance, estimating project costs, investigating problems, recommending actions; or an equivalent combination of training and experience totaling four years. Certified as NICET 2 in Fire Alarm Systems or NICET 1 in Water Based Fire Protection or NICET 1 in Special Hazards. Must possess and maintain NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800 certificates.
  • Fire Safety Technician III: Five years of related experience, which includes regular participation in activities such as project planning, designing, ensuring code compliance, estimating project costs, investigating problems, recommending actions or similar tasks.
  • Appropriate certifications in specialized field including NICET (sprinkler/alarm)
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet University Driving Policy standards (All Levels)
  • Must be able to meet and maintain Fleet Services campus driving requirements (Levels II and III)

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of various fire extinguishers.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and techniques used in fire prevention.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability and skill to operate safely and maintain equipment and hand/power tools.
  • Basic knowledge with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to move up to 80 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a variety of environments including heights, confined spaces, poorly lit areas, high sound levels, with possible exposure to chemical, biological, radiological, and neurological, and other environmental hazards.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with other departmental personnel, students, staff, vendors, suppliers, and the general public.
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all duties of Fire Safety Inspector, and Fire Safety Technician based on classification.
  • Perform monthly fire and life safety inspections on Exit and Emergency Lighting, Fire Extinguishers, Fire Sprinkler Valves, Fire Pumps, AED Units, and Stop the Bleed Kits.
  • Check buildings for code violations, blocked exits, and egress paths, etc.
  • Assist with other inspection, testing, and maintenance tasks as required NFPA work.
  • Use a wide variety of hand and power tools to accomplish tasks including electronic devices such as smart phones or tablets.
  • Use technology as required in fulfilment of position (e.g., email, Employee Self Service, work order system).
