About The Position

The Fire Safety Specialist provides technical assistance for the implementation of the Hospital’s Fire Protection Program in areas of operations, training, maintenance, construction, engineering, inspection and procurement. Plans, coordinates and conducts fire safety training including fire drills, fire safety in-services and employee orientation in all hospital buildings including off-site locations. Updates local and building fire safety plans as necessary. Responsible for oversight of various safety programs including Fire Safety, Above Ceiling Work Permits, Hot Work Permits, Interim Life Safety and Fire Watch. Responsible for training, evaluation and direction of staff and vendors on all Fire Safety Programs. Audits programs on an on-going basis and programs and recommend changes. Provides input on all matters pertaining to the Life Safety Sub Committee issues. Prepares and maintains records and activities relating to the inspection, prevention and elimination of fire and safety hazards. Maintains records of all fire department inspections. Ensures compliance with applicable federal, state and local regulations including the NYS-DOH, CMS, The Joint Commission, OSHA, FDNY and the NFPA Life Safety Code. Monitors construction/renovation sites to ensure compliance with the Hospital’s Interim Life Safety Measure program and policy. Responds to Fire Safety Alert alarm activations during normal business hours and off-hours including nights and weekend. Conducts follow-up inspections on fire alarm incidents and activations for off-hours including nights and weekends and serves as the contact individual for the local fire department. This is a full time position located at NewYork-Presbyterian / Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Requirements

  • One year of experience in a Healthcare environment or a fire-protection-related field
  • Thorough knowledge of Joint Commission standards, NFPA standards, NYC Fire Department Directives, NYC Fire and Building Codes and OSHA regulations
  • Strong computer skills and familiarity with word processing, database management and spreadsheet development and cloud systems
  • Strong analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science or related field
  • Fire Drill Conductor
  • Fire Safety Director
