About The Position

The main purpose of this position is the enforcement of State laws in the field of fire prevention and fire inspection in order to preserve life and protect property from fire and other emergency conditions.

Requirements

  • Education:�� Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Experience: None.
  • Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
  • Employees in this classification are assigned duties in a given service area of the State.
  • Candidates for positions in this classification will be subject to an initial drug screening, a physical examination and a complete criminal background investigation before permanent appointment can be made. A criminal conviction record may be grounds for rejection of the candidate.
  • Employees in this classification must successfully meet the standards established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 1031) for Fire Safety Inspector I prior to completion of the probationary period.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce Maryland State Fire Prevention Code and various code requirements by conducting fire safety inspections of new and existing structures, and identifying occupancy classification, computing the allowable occupant load, inspecting the means of egress elements, verifying the type of construction for an addition or remodeling projects. Conducting inspections of places of public assembly, such as bars and restaurants, exhibition halls, commercial and mercantile buildings, hotels and motels to ensure public safety. Has an extensive knowledge of the Maryland Fire Prevention code, and numerous national fire codes to ensure compliance of various occupancies for fire and life safety. Must have vast knowledge of building construction types as well as fire protection features and equipment.
  • Learns to determine if facilities meet the State Fire Prevention Code, and subsequently determine the appropriate timeframe required to complete any violations noted or if violations are in negligence of State law, which may be due to complaints of various occupancies. Testify to the Maryland State Fire Prevention Commission at hearings where appeals are filed by those who are aggrieved by an order or decision of the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
  • Demonstrate and show continual proficiency in utilizing effective communications skills, which include (1) reading and comprehension skills, (2) verbal skills, (i.e. receiving, comprehending and responding verbally to communications) and (3) writing skills, effectively completing various forms, which include detailed reports and fire safety inspection documents. Learns to independently conduct inspections and prepare for future inspections or appeals.
  • Other duties as assigned.
