About The Position

Join IMEG as a Fire Protection Engineering Intern in Urbandale, IA and ignite your career with real-world experience designing systems that safeguard lives and property. Over 10–12 weeks, you’ll contribute to the design and analysis of sprinklers, clean agent suppression, fire pumps, standpipes, and integrated fire alarm systems for high-rises, data centers, schools, hospitals, and more. Using hydraulic and fire modeling software with BIM, you’ll collaborate with experienced engineers to deliver innovative, code-compliant solutions—while gaining mentorship, training, and professional development opportunities to launch your future in fire protection engineering.

Requirements

• Completed at least 2 years towards a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent required
• Prior internship experience in the building design consulting industry preferred
• Strong interest in design consulting
• Proficient with MS Office Suite including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Skilled in AutoCAD and/or Building Information Modeling (BIM) software
• Ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups

Responsibilities

• Assist in designing discipline-specific systems per code and IMEG standards
• Research commercially available equipment
• Support client relations, maintain project design notebooks, and prepare permanent record documentation
• Coordinate design and schedules with other disciplines and suppliers
• Document design decisions, meetings, and client instructions while tracking progress
• Review project documents for accuracy and completeness before final checks
• Prepare and issue addendum information
• Conduct job site observations and perform services per contract requirements
