About The Position

Advanced Technologies and Laboratories (ATL), a Planned Systems International (PSI) company, is hiring for a Fire Protection Engineer in Richland, WA. This position will support Navarro-ATL. Navarro-ATL is located in Richland, WA and operates, manages, and maintains the 222-S Laboratory Complex for the Department of Energy. Navarro-ATL members are Navarro Research and Engineering, Inc. (Oak Ridge, TN), and Advanced Technologies and Laboratories International (Gaithersburg, MD). Our Fire Protection Engineering group is seeking a dynamic Fire Protection Engineer with outstanding technical and problem-solving abilities; and has interpersonal relationship building and excellent time management skills. Our mission is to minimize the likelihood of occurrence of a fire-related event, minimize the consequence of a fire-related event affecting the workers, public, environment, and property, and provide a level of safety protection consistent with the "highly protected risk" class of industrial risks. The Fire Protection Engineer (FPE) maintains, implements, and improves the Fire Protection Program at the 222-S Laboratory Complex. This role advises and aids in interpreting fire codes and standards. The FPE reviews construction and fire protection designs, drawings, calculations, schedules, and documentation to ensure compliance with fire protection codes and standards and communicates necessary changes. Additionally, the FPE evaluates fire protection appliances, devices, fire-detection equipment, alarm systems, and sprinkler systems.

Requirements

  • Grade 18:Bachelor of Science (BS) in Engineering discipline with seven (7) years of Fire Protection Engineering experience.
  • Grade 20:Bachelor of Science (BS) in Engineering discipline with ten (10) years of Fire Protection Engineering experience.
  • Grade 21:Bachelor of Science (BS) in Engineering discipline with twelve (12) years of Fire Protection Engineering experience.
  • Meets the qualifications for Professional Member grade in the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, OR is a Professional Member grade in the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, OR is a Registered Professional Fire Protection Engineer.
  • Has thorough understanding and demonstrated application of the International Building Code, NFPA codes and standards, and Federal or State occupational safety and health requirements that impact facility safety and equipment design.

Nice To Haves

  • BS or MS in Fire Protection Engineering discipline.
  • Current appointment as Hanford Deputy Fire Marshal.
  • Experience supporting an operating chemical laboratory.
  • At least 5 years of experience in a nuclear/radiological environment performing Fire Protection Engineering duties.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates and incorporates conventional engineering and scientific practices.
  • Provides technical support to the overall organization and mission.
  • Prepares Fire Marshal Permits.
  • Assists the Hanford Fire Marshal with fire investigations.
  • Develops the resolution of fire system discrepancies/non-compliances.
  • Collaborates with operating organizations to assure fire hazards are controlled/mitigated, that life safety is maintained, and that facilities and operations are compliant.
  • Supports new and remodel construction activities.
  • Ensures compliance with DOE Orders and Standards, International Building Code, and NFPA Codes.
  • Reviews and approves drawings, calculations, specifications, and reports for new and revised designs.
  • Develops/witnesses fire system acceptance tests.
  • Ensures fire protection equipment procurement and maintenance practices are compliant with DOE and statutory fire protection requirements, standards, and recommended practices.
  • Interfaces with the Hanford Fire Marshal (HFM) and performs Deputy Fire Marshal (DFM) duties once qualified.
  • Collaborates with building management to keep them advised of changes, special problem issues, and/or new fire protection requirements.
  • Establishes and interprets fire protection policies, codes, standards, requirements, and maintains program procedures applicable to operations, activities, projects, and facilities.
  • Reviews and revises the Fire Hazards Analyses and prepares Fire Hazard Evaluations.
  • Prepares Exemption/Equivalency Evaluations relative to DOE/NFPA.
  • Performs fire prevention inspections and facility fire protection assessments.
  • Performs comprehensive Fire Protection Program self-assessments.
  • Collaborates with inspection, test, and maintenance subcontractors working on Navarro-ATL fire protection systems.
  • Attends training courses to maintain proficiency in the mandatory fire protection standards of the program.
  • Provides technical assistance to DOE.
