About The Position

The Fire Prevention Specialist is responsible for performing technical, educational, and enforcement work related to fire prevention, fire and life safety inspections, public education, and code compliance. This position plays a critical role in promoting the District's mission of saving lives and property through a focus on reducing the risk of fire from proactive inspection, investigation, and community outreach efforts. FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must possess at least a high school diploma or GED
  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid Colorado Driver's License
  • VFIS Driver Operator or equivalent
  • BLS CPR/First Aid within 6 months of hire
  • ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 within six months of hire
  • State of Colorado First Responder Inspector certification within six months of hire
  • International Code Council Fire Inspector I within one year of hire
  • State of Colorado Public Fire and Life Safety Educator 1 within two years of hire, unless otherwise agreed upon by the Fire Chief or authorized designee
  • State of Colorado Youth Firesetter Intervention Specialist 1 within two years of hire, unless otherwise agreed upon by the Fire Chief or authorized designee, to four years of hire
  • Effective communication and speaking in public.

Nice To Haves

  • One or more years of experience in the fire service is preferred.
  • Current and/or previous Fire Service Certifications, such as S130/190, Fire Officer, Hazardous Materials, Driver Operator, etc.
  • This position's ongoing certification development is managed through the succession matrix.

Responsibilities

  • Carries out duties in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations and industry best practices.
  • Obtains and maintains a sound knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations and industry best practices.
  • Schedules and performs fire safety inspections in a variety of commercial, residential, and educational occupancies in a timely manner and in accordance with organizational standards and industry best practice.
  • Inspections may be performed indoors or outdoors and may deal with a variety of code enforcement, access/egress, wildland, and other life safety issues.
  • Prepares and issues verbal and written correction notices to building/business owners regarding code violations, including coordination of follow-up inspections
  • Completes data entry and record keeping of all job-related activities to ensure the District's records management system is up to date.
  • Assists with the implementation and delivery of the District's public outreach and education programs.
  • Provides training to District members on various life safety and fire prevention topics as assigned.
  • Maintains a sound operational knowledge of the District's geography and target hazards.
  • Establishes and maintains positive and effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, District officials and other area emergency service providers.
  • Assists with on-scene and follow-up activities of the District's fire investigation program.
  • Interprets and applies complex regulations and technical documents.
  • Works independently and exercises sound judgment in field inspections and enforcement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
