About The Position

Fire Prevention & Security Officer II Pay Rate: $15.86/ Hour As a Fire Prevention & Security Officer II with the Sallisaw State Veterans Home you will enjoy: Generous leave including 15 days of vacation, 15 days of sick leave and 11 paid holidays annually. Basic Purpose Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities at a state facility or institution involving the inspection of buildings and grounds for elimination of fire hazards, enforcement of laws, rules and regulations and providing security against acts of terrorism for state facilities, employees and the public. This may include patrolling assigned premises to identify and correct fire hazards, providing assistance to employees or visitors, directing traffic and performing other duties related to the protection of state property, employees, visitors and others. Some positions may be primarily responsible for fire prevention activities and have additional responsibilities assigned for assisting in firefighting activities. Typical Functions The functions performed in this job family will vary by level, unit and organization, but may include the following: Patrols and inspects buildings and grounds, within an assigned area, to detect and eliminate fire hazards and discourage vandalism. Interprets and enforces rules and regulations; safeguards life and property at state facilities or institutions and surrounding grounds. Responds to fire alarms and reports irregular activities; apprehends or expels violators; answers inquiries and gives directions to employees and the general public. Ventilates buildings to remove heat, smoke and gases; makes forced entries to rescue persons during fires or other emergencies. Checks authorized persons in or out of buildings and grounds area and assures that unauthorized persons are denied access; checks to see that doors and windows are secure and lights are out; directs traffic in the vicinity of state facilities and parking areas. Prepares oral and written reports of activities and incidents. Level Descriptor Levels are distinguished based on the complexity of assigned duties, the level of expertise required for completion of work assignments, and the responsibility assigned for the supervision of others. This is the career level of the job family where employees are assigned duties and responsibilities at the full-performance level and perform a variety of tasks involving patrolling and inspecting buildings and grounds within assigned areas and enforcing laws, rules and regulations in safeguarding life and property. This includes inspecting hydrants and sprinklers for proper operation; checking fire extinguishers, emergency lighting and alarm systems for proper condition; inspecting places of public assembly for any violation of security or fire prevention practices; administering emergency measures; instructing institution employees in firefighting, first aid and other security procedures; responding to fire alarms and determining causes; and assisting in firefighting activities if required. At this level, limited direction and training may be provided to entry level employees performing security and fire prevention duties.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the methods and objectives of security
  • knowledge of standard fire prevention and protection theory
  • knowledge of fire causes and the proper procedures for extinguishing various types of fires
  • knowledge of procedures to properly and safely operate various types of equipment and apparatuses
  • knowledge of first aid.
  • Ability is required to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • Ability to evaluate emergency situations and adopt effective courses of action
  • Ability to conduct security operations for an assigned facility or institution and surrounding grounds
  • Ability to operate and maintain firefighting equipment
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a basic security and/or firefighter’s course and two years of experience in security or fire prevention and protection work.
  • Applicants must be willing and able to fulfill all job-related travel normally associated with this position.
