About The Position

Install, repair, and inspect smoke and fire suppression systems and life safety systems. Inspect, test and repair fire alarm wiring, fire alarm panels, fire alarm related devices and test fire alarm systems, life safety equipment and peripheral equipment. Identifies hazard defects and the need for adjustment or repair. Follow up on corrective actions. Understand the National, State and Local Fire Safety Codes and law that pertain to the University Buildings. Troubleshoot alarms and answer calls regarding life safety devices and perform general building maintenance and preventative maintenance as assigned. Maintain all UPS Systems, security panels and card readers for all University facilities. This position responds to emergency situations and is considered a "critical personnel" position. This position must serve on the rotation for standby and on call situations.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree/Vocational Technical Training in Fire Science and/or Electronics and two (2) years of experience in maintenance of Fire and/or Life Safety Equipment.
  • Certified by the State of Kentucky to inspect and maintain Sprinkler Systems and/or Fire Alarm Systems.
  • Factory certification on Grinell DCP-200 and/or Grinell Mini-plex 1000 systems. This certification can be used in place of the Fire Alarm or Sprinkler Systems Certification.
  • Valid driver's license and must be insurable through the University.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical.
  • Additional experience may be used on a one-to-one basis to offset the educational requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of NFPA standards is a plus (including 70 and 72).
  • Requisite Knowledge of NFPA standards of and including: NFPA 1 National Fire Code, 10 Fire Extinguishers, 13 Fire Sprinkler Installations, 17a/96 Chemical Rangehood Systems, 20 Fire Pumps, 25 Inspecting testing fire sprinkler, 70 & 70e Electrical codes, 72 Fire Alarm & Signaling code, 90/90a HVAC & Duct smoke code, 92 Atria Smoke Control Systems, 101 Life Safety code, 291 Fire hydrants & fire mains, 1031 Fire inspector & Plan reviewer and 2001 Clean agent systems).
  • Be able to work in various environments of: Office, Residential (Dorm), Commercial, Industrial, Institutional, Level I, II & III labs and adhere to procedures and protocols associated with each environment.
  • Working knowledge of Sprinkler systems. (Sprinkler Inspectors License not required).
  • Experience in maintaining and troubleshooting electrical and low voltage systems, systems, such as security systems, access control, and fire alarm systems.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for inspections, testing, emergency response and maintaining facility life safety and security systems.
  • Assist with installation or upgrades on fire alarms in University campus buildings.
  • Perform inspections to ensure alarms are installed according to codes, standards and properly functioning.
  • Perform plan review of new and existing fire and life systems per NFPA 1031.
  • Test and repair alarm systems already installed.
  • Diagnose fire alarm system issues and to maintain, adjust repair, and replace a variety of fire alarms and related components.
  • Performs periodic maintenance on fire alarm systems equipment in accordance with the PM Program, NFPA and manufacturer's guidelines.
  • Diagnoses, repairs, and performs scheduled Preventative Maintenance on existing fire alarm, detection, notification, and reporting systems.
  • Ensures compliance with the applicable IBC, IFC and NFPA codes, UFC Code and satisfaction of the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
  • Properly document deficiencies/impairments noted during inspections or service work and follow required process of reporting deficiencies while on-site.
  • Respond to campus fire & life safety emergencies of: Fire and sprinkler activations, security alarms, elevator alarms, process alarms, power outages, and general emergencies affecting campus community.
  • Perform life safety detail during sporting and special dignitary events.
  • Assist with or perform installation, repair, and maintenance of wet, dry, pre-action, and deluge fire sprinkler systems, standpipes, backflow preventers, fire hydrants, underground and fire pumps.
  • Assist with or perform fire sprinkler, fire pump and other water-based equipment inspections and testing.
  • Adhere to local, corporate, and OSHA safety policies and procedures.
