About The Position

The Fire Lieutenant position in the City of Alton involves supervising assigned personnel and commanding fire suppression companies under the direction of higher-ranking officers. The role is critical for ensuring the safety of subordinates, peers, and citizens during emergency and non-emergency situations, adhering to the Fire Department's standard operating guidelines. Fire Lieutenants may work either a 24-hour shift schedule or a standard 40-hour administrative schedule, depending on their assignment.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required; Associate's degree preferred.
• Valid Texas driver's license.
• CPR Certification from the American Heart Association.
• BLS Certification or higher from the Texas Department of State Health Services.
• Texas Commission on Fire Protection Basic Fire Fighter Certification (upon completion of Academy).
• 1 year of experience in a related field.
• Computer skills for documentation and reporting.

Nice To Haves

• Specialized courses in Leadership and supervision.
• Certification as a Paramedic Emergency Medical Technician.
• Completion of Fire Science college-level courses.

Responsibilities

• Supervise assigned personnel and fire suppression companies.
• Respond to emergency incidents and utilize BLS or ALS skills.
• Assume duties of the Shift Captain in their absence.
• Conduct in-service training sessions for company personnel.
• Schedule and coordinate pre-fire plans and hydrant testing.
• Administer emergency first aid and manage patient transport to medical facilities.
• Participate in activities related to natural disasters and hazardous material incidents.
• Produce written documentation for technical and legal matters.
• Communicate effectively with management, peers, and the public.
• Monitor firefighting performance and ensure compliance with guidelines.
