CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE EXAMINATION FOR LIEUTENANT IN THE DIVISION OF FIRE (Internal employees only) GENERAL INFORMATION Written Examinations for the position of Lieutenant in the Division of Fire, will be administered Wednesday, January 14, 2026 at 10:00 am at Cleveland Heights Community Center, 1 Monticello Blvd., Cleveland Heights. Two-hour Assessment Center evaluations with a panel of Fire Chiefs selected by the Ohio Fire Chief's Association will be subsequently scheduled (tentatively March 3 rd and March 4 th , 2026). Candidates arriving later than the posted times for the written or assessment center portion of the process will be excluded from participation and therefore ineligible for placement on the Civil Service list. A written test, may consist of up two hundred (200) true/false, modified true/false, multiple-choice questions and questions based on comparative statements will be the ranking test element. Eligible applicants may submit application on-line at www.clevelandheights.com . Click on the Employment Opportunities tab and select the appropriate examination. Applicants must have served for at least 84 months with the Cleveland Heights Fire Department. Applications will only be accepted Monday, December 22, 2025 to Friday December 26, 2025. The minimum passing grade on the written examination will be 70%. For parties who have received a passing grade, points will be awarded for seniority in the Fire Service with the Cleveland Heights Fire Department according to the following schedule (points are awarded after the written examination and oral Assessment Center evaluation are completed): Years 1 - 4: 1 point for each year and .5 point of any ½ year or more during the first 4 years Years 5 - 14: .6 point for each year and .3 point for any ½ year or more during the 5 - 14 years Maximum: 10 points When two or more candidates have received the same total score, the person with the greater seniority in the Division shall have priority. Fire Engineering What You Accept is What You Teach: Setting Standards for Employee Accountability, Cohen GENERAL PURPOSE Protects life and property by supervising and performing fire fighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention duties. Maintains fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities. Performs and supervises all related station activities as assigned. Performs and supervises firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks. Shall be familiar with the incident management system including but not limited to, establishing command, initiating emergency scene activities based on initial size-up, transferring command when relieved, communicating ability or inability to accomplish task assignments to the incident commander, keeping company personnel together, operating toward assigned objectives within the overall strategy defined by the incident commander, and reporting all hazards and taking any immediate actions necessary to avoid injury. Participates in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects. Instructs classes in assigned subject areas. Receives and relays fire calls and alarms. Operates radio and other communication equipment. Participates in the inspection of buildings, hydrants and other structures in the fire prevention programs. Supervises general maintenance work and daily housekeeping duties in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; care of grounds around station, makes minor repairs, hose care and testing, apparatus and equipment care and maintenance. Prepares all necessary reports, log and journal entries deemed necessary for departmental operations and supervises those prepared by subordinates. Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, hazardous communications, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and emergency aid activities. Responsible for the safety of personnel and equipment of their assigned company when performing emergency and non emergency duties. Presents programs to the community on safety, medical and fire prevention topics. Performs and supervises salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water and removing debris. PERIPHERAL DUTIES Assists in department supervisory and administrative activities as assigned. Assists in training new employees as assigned. Performs minor repairs to departmental equipment. Performs such other duties as the Chief or other superior may assign.
